The sustainable exploitation of these abandoned mines is a top priority globally. Open-pit lakes created in the abandoned mining site provide benefits and present risks for the mining region. The paper presents a methodology to assess the hazards (mining and natural). The proposed methodology framework is based on well-established and internationally accepted risk management standards and allows the assessment of the long-term stability of pit lakes. Ground movement, water pollution, fire hazards are presented, and their impact evaluated based on feedback and international experiences. The methodology was applied for 13 European open-pit lakes created in former European coal and lignite mines. A risk assessment of Most lake, using qualitative and a weighted probabilistic approach that considers the overall and the individual effect of identified mining and natural hazards, shown that the main potential hazards are...

It is based on the use of a simulator for ground movement under natural gravity (1g), developed by the research team. The works include the development of an image analysis method to characterize large deformation, cracks, location, length and aperture. An algorithm calculates a level of damage calibrated with classifications based on visual assessments. The methodology has been applied to several scenarios in order to ensure its efficacy and reproducibility at low scale.

Trying to understand and, even more, predict this kind of events appears to be very complex. INERIS developed a methodology based on coupling seismic analysis (monitoring) and numerical modelling. It enables to define the location of the tremors as well as the released induced stresses. This methodology appears to be efficient for detecting areas of coalmines prone to rockburst hazard as well as a powerful tool for assisting the planning of underground workings in complex geological and mining conditions.

The damages due to the subsidence may affect the structures and the infrastructures. The qualification of the level of potential damages is done without taking into account the soil-structure interaction. INERIS realizes today an important research program to study the effect of soil-structure interaction. Three research tools are adopted: in situ observation, physical and numerical modelling. INERIS has realized the concept and the construction of an important physical model for modelling the subsidence. A simple house was also constructed on the subsidence zone. The fi rst results of the physical modelling clearly show the influence of structures on the through subsidence shape. Thank to the numerical modelling, we know that the amplitude of the ground movement transmitted to the structure depends on their stiffness, it varies between 5 % and 100 % of the movement induced by un...

The need for continuous assessment and monitoring of the stability of abandoned shafts present a real challenge mainly for deep shafts. The European STAMS research project (Long-term STability Assessment and Monitoring of flooded Shafts), subsidized by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel programme (RFCS), is addressing this issue. The objective of the STAMS project is to implement Periodic Inspection Modules, and to design permanently installed monitoring systems, to achieve periodic and long-term continuous monitoring and condition assessment of flooded mine shafts. The project proposes solutions to monitor and to assess the stability and the conditions of flooded shafts, including the non-flooded portions of partially flooded shafts, for long periods of time. The Multi-functiona...

Without the reviews, which help the editors to make the right decisions and help authors to improve their submitted papers through their comments and questions, we would not be able to maintain the high quality of the journal. Their contribution ensures that only innovative high quality papers are published. With this in mind, we are certain that you will all join us in thanking all those scientists and experts in the various fields represented in Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, for devoting time and effort to review the papers that we have been sending them. In particular we thank, also on behalf of authors, all those who reviewed a large number of papers. The editors and publisher acknowledge the colleagues listed below for their excellent reviews of papers for which final decisions have been made during the period January 2012 through December 2012.
