The authors collected airborne samples from various sources. Lung tissue samples or bronchoalveolar lavage fluids were available for 80 subjects, who were interviewed regarding their residential and occupational histories. The authors analyzed all samples by analytical transmission electron microscopy. Results indicated that the use of the tremolite-based whitewash may generate high airborne fiber levels and result in asbestos lung contents comparable with those observed in occupational settings. The highest airborne tremolite concentrations were reached during sweeping in whitewashed houses. Lung concentrations of tremolite fibers were significantly higher in subjects exposed to the whitewash than in unexposed subjects, and the concentrations increased with the duration of exposure.

In predentine, labelling was more dense at the transition zone between the inner proximal third and the two outer thirds. Odontoblast processes were also positively stained, mostly in predentine and to a lesser degree in dentine. The dentine-enamel junction was intensely labelled, whereas dentine and forming enamel were only faintly stained. Gold-antibodies complexes were seen inside secretory ameloblasts and odontoblasts in cytosolic locations. The distribution of stromelysin-1 was compared with the distribution of 2-B-6 epitope, an antibody recognizing chondroitin-4-sulphate/dermatan sulphate and which showed a decreasing gradient from the proximal zone to the distal part of predentine. In contrast, both 5-D-4, an anti-keratan sulphate antibody and an anti-lumican antibody displayed a reversed distribution, with an incre...

Here we investigate if this competition could play a role in the persistence of the polymorphism of handedness in human populations. A negative frequency-dependent selection mechanism has been hypothesized, based on the fact that left-handed men may benefit from a "surprise" advantage during fighting interactions because they are rare in human populations. This advantage may thereby enhance the probability of survival of left- handed men and/or their reproductive success through an increase in social status. In this study, we first explored the association between hand preference and lifetime fighting behavior in a population of 1,161 French men. No effect of hand preference on the probability of fighting was detected, suggesting that the innate propensity to fight does not differ between left- and right-handers. However, among men who had been involved in at least one fight during their life...
Spontaneous localized perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, unrelated to mechanical intestin... more Spontaneous localized perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, unrelated to mechanical intestinal obstruction and with no evidence of necrotizing entrocolitis (NEC), occurred in 20 neonates. Three perforations were located in the stomach, 11 in the small intestine, and six in the colon. Maternal obstetric complications as well as prematurity and postnatal distress were common in these patients. The overall survival rate was 80%. There was no late gastrointestinal symptoms in the survivors. Whether idiopathic perforation of the gastrointestinal tract results from a localized form of NEC or from a distinct lesion of unknown etiology has not yet been ascertained. Some ideas concerning the etiology of this entity, as well as some diagnostic aspects are discussed.
After partial hepatectomy the normal low proliferation rate of hepatocytes increases dramatically... more After partial hepatectomy the normal low proliferation rate of hepatocytes increases dramatically. This is based on a feed-back system whose central link is a liver cell proliferation hormone, the so-called hepatopoietin. This glycoprotein is organ-specific but not species-specific, i.e. an extract from rats is also active in mice. In order to examine the influence of selenium on liver cell proliferation, male albino NMRI mice were fed a selenium-deficient diet containing less than 10 ppb Se for at least 2 months (Se-). In the plasma protein profile and in the basic DNA synthesis rate of Se(-)-animals, no significant changes were observed compared to controls. However, liver cell proliferation induced by hepatopoietin or by partial hepatectomy was increased about 3-fold in Se-deficient mice. We assume a compensated metabolic Se-deficiency state in mice under these nutritional conditions, which leads to expression of enhanced metabolic capacity when induced by stress.

The aim of this study was therefore to examine, in women and men, the cross sectional relations between psychosocial work variables (psychological demands, decision latitude, and social support) and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, overweight, smoking, and alcohol consumption). The original cohort comprised 20,625 volunteers (men aged from 40 to 50 and women from 35 to 50) employed by the French Company Electricité De France-Gaz De France and followed up yearly since 1989. The study was restricted to the 13,226 volunteers in the cohort who were still working and answered a self administered questionnaire on psychosocial work factors in 1995. Data were based on replies to this questionnaire. Three psychosocial work environment exposure scores were used to assess psychological demands, decision latitude, and social support at work respectively. The main outcome measures were the prevalence of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, and diabetes within the previous 12 months, overweight, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Psychosocial work factors were significantly associated with hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, overweight, smoking, and alcohol consumption, but not with diabetes. In men, low decision latitude was associated with hypertension, high decision latitude and high social support with overweight, low decision latitude with alcohol consumption. Moreover, the risk of hyperlipidaemia increased in men exposed to both high psychological demands and low social support. In women, low decision latitude was related to hyperlipidaemia, high psychological demands with overweight, high psychological demands and high decision latitude with smoking, and low social support with alcohol consumption. These cross sectional results underline the potential effects of psychosocial work characteristics on cardiovascular risk factors and the differences between the effects of job stress in men and women, and confirm the direct mechanisms (through physiological variables) and indirect mechanisms (through behavioural risk factors) potentially involved in the relation between psychosocial work characteristics and cardiovascular disease.

In particular, the effect of chondroitine sulfate (CS) and biglycan (BG) additions to the gel on the growth kinetics and morphology of HA crystals has been investigated. Large molecules of CS disrupt the gel and lower its viscosity, thus increasing
