Definition of the project (or « programme of observation ») and how it will be written is somehow left aside.

Her systematic purpose in promoting the application of geography to regional and urban planning is a feature of her entire career. She was a pioneer in population geography and urban geography. She analyzed the challenges of the post-war period on worldwide scale, and also on the various scales of geographical space. She was a specialist in the problems facing large metropolises, she remained very open to methodological and thematic innovation, and she explored numerous subareas of human geography (commercial activities, health, etc.). Her itinerary and the positions she adopted show a pragmatic approach, removed from quarrels among schools of thought and epistemological issues.

This study of how ‘geography’ was labelled in the nineteenth century, particularly from 1860 to 1914, analyses the variety of linguistic configurations in which this order of knowledge was situated in teaching and research debates in France, and in international congresses. The article shows both how geography was persistentlly qualified as a plural and indeterminate science, and the new labelling introduced to distinguish advocates and detractors of geographical dualism from those adhering to a geography without qualifiers, or championing a persistence of qualifiers. The discussions surrounding the collective movement to make geography into a discipline are shown to be influenced by question of teaching and by many transnational interactions
