It will also demonstrate how isiZulu has been taught as a second language for professional purposes. The article is an outcome of the initiative of the multilingualism project formally known as the South Africa Norwegian Tertiary Education Development Programme (SANTED). SANTED is a joint venture of the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD), the Department of Education and several South African Higher Education Institutions. The authors argue that there is a link between language as a resource orientation and the need for UKZN graduates in professional programmes to have communicative competence in isiZulu language.
