Beyond Digital: Exploring the Influence of Two Disruptive Technologies on Marketing Education

This paper explores how the disruptive technologies of cognitive computing and robotics might inf... more This paper explores how the disruptive technologies of cognitive computing and robotics might influence marketing education. The extant literature reports modest yet promising advances for education in general. A pilot study in a Principles of Marketing class suggests students are aware of the likely influence these technology disruptors will have on career choice. For the educator, a proposed solution is a technology marketing curriculum developed with guidance from senior marketing educators at AACSB-accredited schools. Discussion includes how these technology disruptors might enhance marketing education and improve the career prospects of our students.

This study uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to measure a psychiatric hospital'... more This study uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to measure a psychiatric hospital's image. The methodology is illustrated using one of the hospital's public — the consumer public whose data is used to illustrate the development and implementation of an image program which stresses multi-public awareness, preference and utilization of the hospital's services viz-a-viz the hospital's mission statement. The advantage of this study lies with its environmental congruency, the way by which image measurement tools are developed — from the publics themselves. The data for this study came from 381 households in metropolitan Saint John and 204 psychiatric hospital employees.

Improving the Validity of Measures of Patient Satisfaction With Psychiatric Care and Treatment

Surveys of consumer satisfaction with psychiatric services are frequently included in program eva... more Surveys of consumer satisfaction with psychiatric services are frequently included in program evaluations, ostensibly providing the patient&#39;s perspective. However, the consistently high levels of satisfaction reported, despite a wide variety of measures, suggest that these surveys may be of questionable validity. Recognizing that most surveys ask patients to rate aspects of care that professionals feel are important, the authors used a focus-group method to generate attributes of ideal care from the patient&#39;s viewpoint. A pool of 50 patient-generated items were rated for importance by a second group of inpatients on locked units of a provincial psychiatric hospital. A factor analysis and mean importance ratings identified interpersonal relations with staff as a key factor of patient satisfaction. The authors designed a seven-item measure of satisfaction based on this key factor.

This approach bypasses the inherent difficulty associated with the interpretation of results from generic surveys. To illustrate this procedure, an empirical study is reported, addressing perhaps the most difficult patient population to solicit as participants: psychiatric patients.
