This landscape review focuses on intellectual access, i.e. providing guidance for finding and sha... more This landscape review focuses on intellectual access, i.e. providing guidance for finding and sharing literary data, while D6.1 approaches the task from a more technological side, collecting and analyzing literary corpora, available formats, tools, and metadata in order to create an exploratory catalogue / inventory of literary corpora and to provide a transformation matrix/toolbox for solving common issues. Yet we coordinate our efforts – beginning with the compilation of the table of literary collections – therefore one can regard these as two sides of the same coin. The review’s point of departure is the abundance of existing data and their diversity or heterogeneity as regards corpus design and underlying concepts, for example the definitions of text (is it a source, an edition, a data set? see chapter 3), the purpose of a corpus (e.g. general, reference, or monitoring corpora, special purpose corpora; see chapter 4), central considerations or criteria regarding the construction of a corpus (sampling, balancing, representativeness, annotation model(s), data format(s); see likewise chapter 4). How can I go about obtaining data without transgressing ethical or legal boundaries (see chapter 5)? We ask: How can we assist literary scholars in searching for and finding existing data that are relevant to their own research questions? And additionally, what kind of research question is relevant concerning the present-day state of the data landscape and literariness and textuality?
Abstract In this paper, I present theoretical assumptions behind Teoria/Literatura, a multifacete... more Abstract In this paper, I present theoretical assumptions behind Teoria/Literatura, a multifaceted digital research and publishing project on 20th-century Polish literary thought. The point of departure is the conjecture that the tensions between the digital and the humanistic in present-day DH help bring out in full relief the cardinal conflict line in Polish literary theory – between formalism/structuralism on the one hand and phenomenology on the other. Conversely, the order of concepts in the corpus of Polish literary theory enables the researcher to pinpoint the relation of the humanistic and the digital (or formalist) within DH so that it might be challenged and/or upgraded. In the first section, I provide an overview of the project's strata and its wide-ranging goal, i.e., a corpus of Polish literary theory. In section two, I examine the way in which the structure of the corpus can help elucidate the general problem of the relation between the digital and the humanistic in DH. Specifically, I relate this issue to the quarrel in constructive mathematics between mathematical intuitionism and formalism. The third section is devoted to a synecdochal representation of the general problem of the duality of intuitionism and formalism – the visualisation of narrative temporality.
In my article, I describe the tragedy of early modern literary theory in Russia and Poland – both... more In my article, I describe the tragedy of early modern literary theory in Russia and Poland – both as a set of believes concerning the literary genre and as a metahistorical scheme, which was and still may be applied to the intellectual history of the humanities in Eastern and Central Europe. My claim is that the critical theory of tragedy, which has its roots in German philosophy at the end of the 18 th century, may be perceived as a mediator between external and internal history – genesis and evolution – of early modern literary theory. The article provides, firstly, a short overview of the Russian formalist theory of tragedy and the tragic as it emerged in the context of the revolution and its grand festivals. Then, in the second step, I reconstruct how the central themes of the theory of tragedy resonated in the main tenets of formalist literary history. As a final point, I dwell on how our narratives on the history of modern literary theory develop along the lines of the tragic ...

Lukacs, Bachtin i idee ich czasow [‘The Master and The Slave: Lukacs, Bakhtin, and the Ideas of Their Time’], transl. into Polish by M. Adamiak, ed. by D. Ulicka, Oficyna Naukowa, Warsaw 2010. In his review of Galin Tihanov’s comparative study of Lukacs and Bakhtin, Mrugalski argues that the work, while attentive to details, is rather weak in its general concept. Key passages are devoted to Georg Simmel’s influence on both thinkers, on Russian theory of ideology, discussions on the novel, and the notion of dialogism. On the whole, the work represents a bizarre amalgam of positivism and deconstruction – a mix of perspectives that was prevalent in the 1990s. Tihanov disassembles an oeuvre into its constituent influences, which, combined with his quasi-hysterical search for aporias, renders it effectively impossible to appreciate the originality and the signifiance of both think...

The present volume, which constitutes the proceedings of the eponymous conference held in May 201... more The present volume, which constitutes the proceedings of the eponymous conference held in May 2019 at the Polish Institute in Berlin, offers a series of detailed insights into the profoundly networked forms and practices of Neo-Kantian philosophy. Although far from exhaustive, the materials and perspectives gathered here establish beyond doubt that the scope and impact of Neo-Kantianism in the landscape of European culture and ideas can only ever be properly understood if one takes into account not just its main German “schools” (Marburg, Baden) but also its inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural dissemination in other contexts, not least in Poland and Russia. Conversely, this volume also underscores how the broad and diverse influence exerted by Neo-Kantian philosophy in its relatively long period of dominance constitutes a crucial element in the dynamics and evolution of European ideas and intellectual cultures, in particular the fundamental methodological break with the positivist traditions of the 19th century and the slow rise of “new” human sciences or Geisteswissenschaften (anthropology, cultural-historical psychology, linguistics, literary theory, sociology, cultural studies) around 1900.
Literary theory flourished in Central and Eastern Europe throughout the twentieth century, but it... more Literary theory flourished in Central and Eastern Europe throughout the twentieth century, but its relation to Western literary scholarship is complex. This book sheds light on the entangled histories of exchange and influence both within the region known as Central and Eastern Europe, and between the region and the West. The exchange of ideas between scholars in the East and West was facilitated by both personal and institutional relations, both official and informal encounters. For the longest time, however, intellectual exchange was thwarted by political tensions that led to large parts of Central and Eastern Europe being isolated from the West. A few literary theories nevertheless made it into Western scholarly discourses via exiled scholars. Some of these scholars, such as Mikhail Bakhtin, become widely known in the West and their thought was transposed onto new, Western cultural contexts; others, such as Ol’ga Freidenberg, were barely noticed outside of Russian and Poland. This volume draws attention to the schools, circles, and concepts that shaped the development of theory in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the histoire croisée – the history of translations, transformations, and migrations – that conditioned its relationship with the West.
