Dense-dispersion-managed transmission links, in which the local nonlinearity is utilized to balance the average dispersion of the system, provide another avenue for high-bit-rate communication. Theoretical studies have demonstrated the feasibility of transmitting 100 Gbit/s over distances greater than 1000 km. Using a dense-dispersion map we have successfully transmitted an error-free 200 Gbit/s return-to-zero data stream over 100 km

We report on a simple, practical, and extremely stable, actively mode-locked polarisation maintaining (PM) Er-Yb co-doped, Panda fiber ring laser. The ring consists of only five components and all were fabricated from Panda PM fiber. They are: fiber coupler, Er-Yb co-doped fiber, cavity length control fiber spool, a polarization sensitive isolator, and a Mach-Zender amplitude modulator.

Single-digit decibel conversion loss is achieved into the millimeter-wave band. Digitization and linearity of the downconverted signal are also discussed.

This topology along with digital signal processing techniques allows multi-octave alias-free digitization of microwave signals.

We demonstrate a fundamentally different demodulation scheme based on the high-energy, ultrafast, broadband pulses generated by a passively mode-locked erbium fiber laser as an alternative approach for high-speed interrogation of large grating arrays
