nidificants. Unes senzilles mesures de conservació recuperarien l’important valor ecològic d’aquest aiguamoll mediterrani.
The Cuadro de Santiago wetland is currently being dried out by the action of a pumping system that discharges about 2 Hm3 of water per year to the sea. Through this study I try to make an approach to the
current state of conservation of the birds in this ecosystem.
The avifauna of the Cuadro de Santiago wetland shows numerous antropic elements in its composition, with high levels of dominance at certain times of the year or in certain biotopes, caused by the small size
of existing biotopes and the drainage, which alters the natural composition of the avifauna. However, the heavy rains of 2015 led to high water levels that allowed the comparision of the ecologycal indexes
with and without surface water, showing that in those biotopes most dependent on water (reed beds and
floodable meadows), species richness increased significantly, and other indexes improved, pointing to an increase in the equilibrium of the avifauna throughout the area.
This work shows that although the conservation of the bird fauna in the ecosystem can be rated as deficient, the Cuadro de Santiago keeps its carrying capacity for both migrant and nesting species almost intact.
Simple conservation measures would recover the important ecological value of this Mediterranean wetland.

Sturnus unicolor, Carduelis carduelis, Delichon urbicum y Serinus serinus.

europeo (Pernis apivorus), aguilucho lagunero occidental (Circus aeruginosus) y cernícalo vulgar (Falco

Differential migration and wintering of the chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) in a wetland
in the Iberian levant.
We studied the behavior of the chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) outside the breeding season in Paraje Natural
del Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca. We observed two different migration periods separated by a central one. In
the post breeding season we observed two different waves, in the first one, females were more abundant than
males, and the speed of passage was faster, while in the second, male proportion increased greatly and the speed
of passage decreased. The post breeding median date of the females was 3 days before males. In the pre breeding
migration we observed a passing pattern: adult male - young male - adult female - young female, typical in
species with differential migration, with a marked distance of 16 days between adult males and adult females,
that we describe here for the first time. Males were more abundant than females in winter (sex-ratio 72-28).
The passing pattern and the sex-ratio point to a latitudinal segregation by sexes, where males would be more
abundant as closer to the breeding grounds. We observed indications of differential use of habitat, so that males
would occupy the wetland to a greater extent than expected. Low recapture rate (1.9%) suggests that the species
behaves mainly as a transient, with short, or moderate stopover duration. Birds recaptured, regained weight during
both migrations but experienced some loses in the center of the winter. Nevertheless, chiffchaffs increased fat
scores in the center of the winter presumably as an strategy to afford changes in temperature and length of the
day, but observed muscle scores decreased, which could account for the losses of weight in the population in the
center of the winter. Males show a higher between-winter recapture than females, but it was overall low(1.48%).
