METHODS: This study was conducted among patients diagnosed with AMD in Kuala Lumpur. The generation of the instrument included four phases which included item and domains development, content, face validity and exploratory factor analysis. Content validity and modified Kappa was used for validation of knowledge domain. Exploratory factor analysis was used for validation of both attitude and practice domains. Face validity was conducted in 12 patients, content validity was ascertained in 120 patients and test-retest reliability was determined in 39 patients with AMD. RESULTS: Content validity index (CVI) and modified kappa showed excellent values for most items in the knowledge domain with CVI for item (I-CVI) values between 0.78-1.0 and Kappa values of >0.74. The aim of this research was to compare driving difficulties between Malaysian drivers with bilateral cataracts and without cataract. This cross-sectional study involved measurement of visual functions [visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS)] and driving difficulty of 61 respondents who had valid driving license and actively driving. Subjects were divided into cataract group (n=30) and age/gender matched non-cataracts as control group (n=31). Results showed the mean±SD for composite driving difficulty score in cataract group and in control group were 72.08±15.95 and 87.50±12.60 respectively. Results also showed significant mean difference composite driving difficulty score between cataract and control group (p=0.000). Cataract drivers also have significant difficulty driving in raining (p=0.034) and at night (p=0.013) compared to drivers...

This study was conducted to determine the visual perceptual skills (non-motor) of a group of adults in Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 120 subjects from Selangor with the age ranging from 20 to 59 years were randomly recruited in this cross-sectional study. This study involved distance and near visual acuity measurements using Snellen chart and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) near vision chart, cognitive screening tests using the Mini Mental State Examination questionnaire (MMSE) as well as visual perceptual skills assessment (non-motor) using the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (Non-Motor)- Revised (TVPS-R). The mean age of the subjects was 39.41+11.81 years old. Results showed that the mean standard scored obtained for Visual Discrimination (VD), Visual Memory (VM), Visual-Spatial Relationships (VSR), Visual Form Constancy (VFC), V...

Background: Vision impairment associated with diabetic retinopathy, is well known and low vision rehabilitation is always recommended. In this report, the importance of objective measure of mental health and quality of life screening in diabetic retinopathy low-vision assessment is discussed.
Case presentation: We describe the case of a 43-year-old Asian female who has mild vision impairment due to tractional retinal detachment secondary to diabetic retinopathy and how mental health screening and quality of life screening during low vision rehabilitation can improve in the management of this patient.
Conclusion: Although vision impairment was mild, the psychological impact was enormous and affected her quality of life substantially. This case report illustrates that recognition of the mental health and quality of life impact on visual impairment is critical to the rehabilitation management of low vision patients with diabetic retinopathy.
