We addressed the following questions: a) does the seed germination of Pseudopiptadenia psilostachya differ between seeds collected directly on the crown and the ones collected on the forest floor? b) what is the effect of the shading level on the seed germination and the initial development of seedlings of this species? Six replicates of 10 seeds were germinated in a growth chamber. The germination rate did not differ between the seed collection methods and the collection of fruits in the forest floor is recommended. During the production of forest seedlings, light quantity can indicate the degree of tolerance of... more During the production of forest seedlings, light quantity can indicate the degree of tolerance of tree species to shading conditions and provide information to obtain seedlings with a higher quality standard. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different levels of shading on the emergence and the quality standard of Parkia multijuga Benth. seedling, a timber species that can be used in landscaping and restoration of degraded areas. The experimental design was completely randomized, consisting of three treatments: full sunlight (control; 2050 µmol m2 s2), 50 (1025 µmol m2 s2), and 70% (615 µmol m2 s2) shading obtained with black polyethylene screens. The results showed that the applied treatments did not significantly influence the emergence percentage. However, under unshaded conditions (i.e., full sunlight), the seeds displayed a higher velocity index and a shorter mean time of seedling emergence. Carapa guianensis is a widespread Neotropical tree species that produces a seed adapted for water... more Carapa guianensis is a widespread Neotropical tree species that produces a seed adapted for water dispersal. We conducted a pilot study of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variation in order to investigate the consequences of hydrochory on genetic diversity and geographic population structure in the lower Amazon basin. A survey of cpDNA haplotype variation reveals a strong regional structure, which suggests limited gene flow by seeds. Within site variation was detected only in one floodplain forest (varzea), suggesting that seed dispersal by water in these forests has the potential to mix maternal lineages. Several phylogeographic hypotheses are discussed with respect to these data.

A resposta fisiológica das sementes varia de acordo com a espécie, sendo recomendável estudar a influência da temperatura e do substrato na germinação de sementes de espécies com elevado valor comercial, como é o caso do ipê amarelo. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas e substratos sobre a germinação de sementes de Handroanthus serratifolius. Avaliou-se, também, a biometria de 50 sementes. O teste de germinação foi realizado adotando-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso (DIC), em esquema fatorial de 2x4, com duas temperaturas constantes (25 e 30 °C), quatro substratos (areia, vermiculita, papel toalha e papel mata-borrão) e quatro repetições de 25 sementes. The freijó-cinza (Cordia goeldiana Huber) is a species with commercial value. Its seeds quickly l... more The freijó-cinza (Cordia goeldiana Huber) is a species with commercial value. Its seeds quickly lose viability when stored in environmental condition of the Amazon. This fact ir one of the main obstacles to the rational cultivation of this species. The objective of this study was to determine the ideal conditions for maintaining freijó seeds viability for a long period. The seeds were collected in the Tapajós National Forest, country of Santarém, Pará State. The germination and humidity content tests were made at the seed laboratory of CPATU, in Belém, Pará State. For the germination tests, blotting paper substratum with six replications of fifty seeds were placed in germination at 25°C. After eleven months, the best storage condition for freijó-cinza seeds with low initial humidity content, was the cool chamber using semipermeable packaging where seed germination was 32,67%.

Foram realizadas avaliações biométricas em frutos e sementes de Parkia nitida e estudado o efeito... more Foram realizadas avaliações biométricas em frutos e sementes de Parkia nitida e estudado o efeito dos tratamentos escarificação mecânica sem (T2) e com (T3) aplicação do fungicida Benomyl; imersão em Η2Ο a 80°C (T4) e a 100°C (T5); imersão em H2SO4 durante 10 (T6), 20 (T7), 40 (T8) e 80 (T9) minutos, na superação da dormência das sementes. Foram totalizadas as sementes germinadas aos 10, 20, 30 e 40 dias após a semeadura. O ensaio foi instalado com quatro repetições de 50 sementes, semeadas em substrato de vermiculita.
