We offer a parsimonious economic model predicting that conditional on own education, those with more highly educated parents and facing higher intergenerational persistence will prefer less redistribution. We test these predictions empirically using country-cohort-gender-specific estimates of intergenerational educational mobility and individual-level survey data from 41 European countries. Our estimation results confirm the theoretical predictions, demonstrating that higher parental education and more promising mobility prospects are significantly associated with lower preferences for income redistribution. These findings highlight the critical need for policies that enhance educational accessibility and affordability to improve intergenerational mobility prospects, which could strengthen redistributive preferences and promote greater equality.
