This article deals with the study of a medieval artificial cave inserted in the rock context of Gravina di San Marco, in Massafra (Taranto). For the first time, we tried to apply the study techniques of the rock-cut dwellings of Lazio in Puglia, analyzing a cave that was never systematically studied: the so-called Casa dell’Igumeno.
For the diachronic analysis of the artifact, we used the observation of architectural anomalies, the analysis of the measurements of the excavation traces, their progress and their trajectories, and the examination of functionalization and de-functionalization ratios of individual negative interventions.
At least six phases of the cavity’s lives have been identified, the oldest of which can be ascribed to the VIII-IX century AC. The comparison between historical sources with other artificial caves in Massafra’s territory provided an interesting historical response.
