Our study starts from the observation of the proximity relationship between the epicenter of a strong earthquake and the surface trace of the seismogenic source. The proposed model is based on the mathematical analysis of seismicity falling within an area, through a polynomial function to determine a curve. The experimental results of our model confirm that 97% of the epicenters of strong earthquakes are located near the concavities or at the inflection points of the polynomial curve. Only 3% of strong earthquakes are located at the edges of the analyzed areas, where the number of data is not significant. The proposed model makes it possible to locate, with good approximation, the areas most likely to be the site of future strong earthquakes.

The Quaternary deposits overlying a strath terrace along the northwestern margin of the River Sec... more The Quaternary deposits overlying a strath terrace along the northwestern margin of the River Secchia, near the village of Roteglia (Italy), have recorded a complex history influenced by changing hydrological conditions, following the last glacial maximum, and syndepositional tectonic activity related to the Canossa-San Romano fault system. The primary role of climate control appears to have been the back-stepping of fluvial systems, as glaciers thawed and retreated in the adjacent Apennine chain. However, the more dominant control on local sedimentation patterns was deposition within two actively-developing half-grabens formed by the Argontello and Border faults of the Canossa-San Romano system. These faults created barriers to fluvial transport and possible ponding of the Secchia, changing the depositional setting from a through-flowing braided stream system to a muddominated meandering channel with abundant overbank deposition or possibly even lacustrine conditions. The barriers were subsequently breached, leading to erosion and development of the most recent and lowest (III order) terrace, referred to as the Roteglia Terrace. Local tectonic control by the Canossa-San Romano system has complicated the regional stratigraphic correlation even over short distances, such as the fluvial fan deposits at Sassuolo where the Secchia enters the Po Plain. A tentative correlation was made between the Roteglia Terrace deposits, the Ravenna Subsynthem and the Modena Unit of the Emilia-Romagna Upper Synthem at Sassuolo, based on stratigraphic position and sedimentary characteristics. However, the local tectonic control makes this correlation uncertain and the deposits of the two areas might actually be unrelated and even out of phase with one another. Further study is necessary to understand this relationship. The focus of this study is to describe, map, and interpret the sedimentary facies of the Roteglia Terrace in order to better understand the tectonic history of the eastern margin of the Apennine chain.

Previous studies show this fault system was active from the Messinian to the mid-Pleistocene, based on normal-fault displacement of the Epiligurian Units and a II-order strath terrace. This article shows that the movement of the Canossa-San Romano fault continued in the Quaternary and might be active today. This new interpretation focuses on the III-order fluvial terrace in the area of Roteglia, which is composed of Quaternary deposits. Understanding the relationship between this III-order terrace and the Canossa-San Romano fault, is important for determining the Roteglia basin geometry and its filling by fluvial sediments transported by the River Secchia. The contact between the Quaternary deposits of the Roteglia Terrace and the underlying Ligurian or Epiligurian Units marks the pre-Quaternary bedrock surface and makes up the Roteglia Basin floor. A DTM model of this surface was developed from a variety of geological data to identify basin-floor geometry. The relationship between the bedrock surface, the overlying Quaternary deposits and the Canossa-San Romano normal fault allowed the present tectonic influence and fault movement to be understood. The 3D model reveals a large, elongated depression with a NE-SW axis that includes two smaller depressions (half grabens), each of which is bounded by a synthetic fault associated with the extensional Canossa-San Romano primary fault. The synthetic faults cut the deposits of the Roteglia Terrace, indicating a more recent movement.

The eventual determination of the epicenters of future earthquakes associated with the expected magnitude can be the tool to better seismic prevention. In this paper, we present some procedures for epicenter prediction of a strong earthquake, developed after a careful analysis of the fluctuations of latitude and longitude values in time and space and distance, between seismic events occurred in a specific area. By analyzing several seismic sequences, whose data have been taken from the numerous catalogs on seismicity, we noticed that the epicenters of the earthquakes that precede the strongest ones, tend to converge towards the epicenter where the strong earthquake will happen, following a pattern and a repetitive directional trend. Analysis of the pattern and trend, which represent the fluctuation of events and distances between pairs of earthquakes, has allowed us to localize the epicentral area of a future earthquake, which more reliably complements the other forecasting methods we have developed in the past. Retrospective tests performed on past seismic sequences have shown that the predictive procedures developed are able to identify in a simple way and in the short term, the area where a strong earthquake is most likely to occur.

The existent geological literature does not suggest the presence of a Quaternary active fault that can explain this seismic sequence. Small earthquakes are related to the same seismogenic process of strong earthquakes and, generally, earthquakes are generated by minor structures associated with regionally important faults, which define the main rupture zone. The structural analysis of mesoscopic faults in outcropping rock-units, and the analysis of hypocentres distribution, provided important information on the geometry, kinematics, and tectonic stress of the main regional fault systems responsible for the occurred seismic event. This paper proposes the seismotectonic model of high Drago-ne valley, when the mesostructural analysis describes the main surface fault systems and the horst and graben structure of Riccovolto village, while, the analysis of hypocentres distribution shows a shallow detachment structure. The model represents clearly an active extensional system of regional importance. Strath terraces covered by thin levels of fluvial and colluvial deposits are found along the banks of the R. Secchia and witness a continued, slow, intermittent tectonic uplift along the northeastern front of the Apennines. Three orders of terraces are present, which were formed through channel scour episodes interspersed with periods of relative quiescence, with channel widening and strath formation. Rates of erosion appear to increase from north to south across a natural threshold, locally known as "Rupe del Pescale" and slow down with decreasing age. A temporal reduction in erosion rates indicates a recent slowdown of the Apennine uplift, which is in disagreement with the interpretation of earlier studies. Evidence for a slowing uplift rate also comes from the Roteglia area, in which GPS measurements and recent R. Secchia deposits show that the uplift has turned to subsidence above the hanging wall of the Canossa-San Romano fault system. The terraces were formed in response to movements along high-angle normal faults of the Canossa-San Romano regional fault system, which has a NW-SE orientation and is characterised by a series of small Horsts and Grabens in the Pantano Formation, along the sides of the R. Secchia. A NE-SW oriented secondary fault system is longitudinal to the R. Secchia and is responsible for its course. There is a significant change in the R. Secchia fluvial style across Rupe del Pescale that accompanies the change in riverbed scour rates and is due, in part, to the formation of a narrow, restricted passage. Lack of a well-defined fault scarp in the Canossa-San Romano system suggests slow movement by means of fault creep. The relationship between the two fault systems indicates that the Canossa-San Romano is the youngest tectonic lineation in the region.

Seismic activity was ascribed to the northward verging fold and thrust structures of the Ferrara-Romagna arc. This study shows a method for calculating the seismic release ratio of seismogenic sources, described as the ratio between the earthquakes' seismic moment and the seismic moment calculated from geological data of fault slip measures. It is a quantitative analysis method of seismotectonic studies, which provides a simple explanation for seismic release and an asperity model of faults. A map of fault seismic release ratio is suggested; it describes the seismic release of the 2012 Emilia seismogenic sources during the 2005-2012 period. The seismic release map shows the seismotectonic evolution and different rheological behaviours of seismic sources. The amplitude increases beyond the normal level just before the earthquake occurs, forming an easily identifiable pattern. The purpose of this study is to analyze the anomalous fluctuations of values the longitude and/or latitude during seismic activity and to carry out some simple procedures, reliable enough for the search of attention signals that precede a strong earthquake and in some cases its epi-center. The retrospective analyses carried out on many sequences of earthquake data occurred in different tectonic environments, have shown how all earthquakes were preceded by abnormal fluctuations in the values of longitude and/or latitude. This study describes the graphic and calculation procedures with the aim of obtaining information on the occurrence of the large earthquakes studied. In particular, we have noticed that the earthquake occurs after extreme levels of fluctuation are reached in the series of values analyzed. Through this model, it is possible to recognize elements discriminated during the evolution of the seismic sequence and using them as possible precursors of short-term, strong earthquakes.

The hypocenters deepened progressively from SW to NE, followed by a marked depth increase in the easternmost areas. In this sector of the Apennines, the fault plane solutions for the main events consist of a NE-SW trending active extension normal faulting, as described by several authors. Through the analysis of the central Italy seismic sequence, a geometric model of regional detachment, characterised by a NE-dipping low-angle plane with normal kinematics, is proposed. This seismotectonic model shows the same features as in the Tiber valley, where the extensional fault system is characterised by a NE-dipping low-angle " Casteluccio-Amatrice " detachment with SW-dipping master faults, antithetical to the previous one.

The outcrops studied belong to the Ranzano Formation (Epiligurian Succession), which in this area represents the lower part of the arenaceous-conglomeratic facies of the Val Pessola Member. From a tectonic viewpoint, the outcrops are located within an area comprised between the Viano syncline to the west and the Montegibbio monocline to the east. The brittle tectonic structures are found along a fault system where the eastern block is lifted compared with the lower western block (Viano syncline). Geological-structural survey of the area allowed the presence of structures, known as deformation bands, to be recognised. They are small millimetre-scale faults present in arenaceous rock types, where fracturing of the grains takes place by shearing. During the survey, structures of different mesofaults were also identified and grouped together into three different families. These structures were analysed according to the geometric method of Anderson's acute dihedral, since it was not possible to detect the presence of kinematic indicators useful for defining the movement of the mesofaults. The data collected show that the area along the River Secchia, where the Epiligurian units emerged, was affected by various deformation events; three of the compressive type and one of the extension type, which generated the different families of tectonic structures.

We aim to describe their major features and how they are connected with foreshocks and aftershocks immediately close in time and space. Examining magnitude value’s fluctuations over time, we see that they form a basic pattern, consisting of three maxima, one of which is central, and two or more events preceding and following it, whose magnitude, in some cases, may be comparable. The retrospective analysis of earthquakes’ patterns of high comparable magnitude has allowed their classification along with the development of some statistically significant relationships between epicentral distance and magnitude difference and between time interval and delay among maxima as well as the identification of activation signals predicting their occurrence. The pattern we identified in seismic sequences analysis, in relation to minor shocks-generated activation signals’ positions may be used to obtain useful information for the evolutionary study of seismic sequences and for predicting double and multiple earthquakes. The graphic analysis procedure applied to the pattern enables us to know the period of seismic sequence’s greatest hazard after a strong earthquake.

We analysed seismic data, related to the 1984 earthquake sequence and the 2010-2015 seismicity, and we obtained information about the history of seismic events and the associated tectonic structure activity, which allowed us to describe the seismotectonics model and seismogenic area. The geometry of the Tiberina Valley fault system that represents a detached surface of regional relevance is subject to a creep deformation along the deeper segments, which determines the evolution of the seismicity of the area. Brittle deformations with the possibility of microseismic as well as strong events are plausible in the most superficial segments. The Gubbio fault is antithetical to the preceding one, showing brittle deformation features with the possibility of developing strong earthquakes. Due to the roll-back of the subduction plane, an extensive regime was established, which led to the activation of two previous faults constraining a “wedge”. Since it is subject to gravity, this wedge collapsed and created graviquakes. We propose an evolutional seismogenic model of the Tiberina-Gubbio Valley. We believe that the graviquake model can be adopted to describe the seismotectonics and seismogenesis of other Apennine areas.

Seismic activity was ascribed to the northward verging fold and thrust structures in the Ferrara-Romagna arc. This study shows how the stress change of May 20th earthquake could have interacted with the adjacent faults. The study highlights a large lobe of increased Coulomb stress change at the root of the external Ferrara thrust and at the top of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust. The transfer model shows a 1-2 bar increase along some fault segments of the external Ferrara thrust, an increase less than 1 bar along other fault segments and a decrease along a segment of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust. The Coulomb stress change (shear and normal component) and transfer model does not show either increase or decrease along the Mirandola thrust (another segment of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust). We therefore assume plausible that the stress transfer from the May 20th MW 5.8 earthquake increased the stress change along the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust first, with its aftershock increase and westward migration and then the triggering of the May 29th MW 5.6 earthquake.

In literature they are defined as aftershocks and play a crucial role in the seismic sequence development: as a result, they should not be neglected. In this paper we analyzed several aftershock sequences triggered after a major earthquake, with the aimed at identifying, classifying and predicting the most energetic aftershocks. We developed some simple graphic and numeric methods that allowed us to analyze the development of the most energetic aftershock sequences and estimate their magnitude value. In particular, using a hierarchisation process related to the aftershocks sequence, we identified primary aftershocks of various orders triggered by the mainshock and secondary aftershocks of various orders triggered by the previous shock. Besides, by a graphic method, it was possible to estimate their magnitude. Through the study of the delay time and distance between the most energetic aftershocks and the mainshock, we found that the aftershocks occur within twenty-four hours after the mainshock and their distance remains within a range of hundreds of kilometers. To define the aftershocks sequence decay rate, we developed a sequence strength indicator (ISF), which uses the magnitude value and the daily number of seismic events. Moreover, in order to obtain additional information on the developmental state of the aftershocks sequence and on the magnitude values that may occur in the future, we used the Fibonacci levels. The analyses conducted on different aftershocks sequences, resulting from strong earthquakes occurred in various areas of the world over the last forty years, confirm the validity of our approach that can be useful for a short-medium term evaluation of the af-tershocks sequence as well as for a proper assessment of their magnitude value.

These features can be identified within the seismic sequence and used as strong events’ precursors. Through the energy release pattern analysis, which precedes any strong earthquakes, in this study we describe some graphical procedures suitable for distinguishing a foreshock from any other type of earthquake. We have broadly divided foreshocks into two classes, depending on their position within the energy release pattern, by describing some relationships between the foreshock’s magnitude and the following earthquake’s. The results obtained show how the energy release pattern of some major earthquakes has distinctive features and repeatability which it is possible to obtain information from in order to perform sufficiently reliable short-term forecasts.

Abstract The seismic sequence of the Chianti hills in Tuscany. Some remarks on the seismogenic structure and seismotectonic model. The seismic sequence following the M 4.0 earthquake of 19th December 2014 in the area of the Chianti hills (Tuscany) has allowed new light to be shed on the geometry of seismogenic sources and the seismotectonic model of the area. Small earthquakes are related to the same seismogenic processes of strong earthquakes and, generally, earthquakes are generated by minor seismogenic structures associated with the main ones, which defie the main rupture zone. The analysis of seismological data, in relation to the tectonic setting of the study area, made it possible to make an assumption about the geometry of seismogenic sources represented by a primary main fault system, identifid by the distribution of hypocentres, with SW-dipping plane and an average inclination of about 40° with normal kinematics. A secondary fault system, identifid by focal mechanisms, consists of a right strike-slip and anti-Apennine direction deformation zone, comparable with the Piombino-Cesenatico line and interpreted as a tear-fault. The combination of these two tectonic structures forms right transtensive systems at a regional scale.

In this study, we aim to understand the earthquakes long-range interactions which constitute the nodes of higher order seismic rods in the upper branching structure, and the hazard level reached in each developmental stage as well as to provide a warning time frame for the most energetic seismic events and a sound method to obtain information on the epicentral area. To this end, we have analyzed several branching structures by using both local and global seismicity. The analysis of different branching structures both on global and local scale highlights long-range interactions between the most energetic earthquakes and their triggering by smaller shocks, thus suggesting that the triggering can occur few minutes to decades before the earthquake, depending on a seismic sequence's development speed and its structure.

Thanks to a graphical method, we have identified and classified some microsequences and reversed phase repetitive patterns that precede the hazardous events. The seismic microsequences include a series of information useful to know in advance the beginning of energy release and accumulation phases that usually precede and follow a moderate-to-high magnitude earthquake. Their identification and correct interpretation allow us to determine various warning signals. In particular, through the analysis of their shape and position in the seismic sequence we can claim that the strongest earthquakes occur shortly after the formation of some peculiar micro-sequences. The checks carried out on large data sets related to earthquakes occurred in the past have shown that the analysis procedures developed do not depend on the size of the area analyzed while predicting a high percentage of moderate-to-high magnitude earthquakes.

By using a seismic sequence hierarchization method, this study graphically explains the preparation process of an earthquake, called " branching structure ". In addition, criteria apt to distinguish the structures that will produce shocks of average magnitude from strong earthquakes' will be defined. Based on the temporal oscillations of the magnitude values, we explain the procedure for identifying the developmental stages that characterize the energy accumulation stage of the branching structure, in order to early detect the energy release stage's trigger point and obtain information on how it will develop over time. The study identifies also some pre-signals (trigger points) of various magnitudes in the energy release stage, which allows us to early predict the foreshocks and mainshock time position. The method we developed constitutes a truly innovative approach for the earthquake forecasting analysis, which dramatically differs from those developed so far, as it considers the structure of the seismic sequence not only as a magnitude values' oscillation, but also as a sequence of developmental stages that may begin much earlier .

The method we developed constitutes a truly innovative approach for the earthquake forecasting analysis, which dramatically differs from those developed so far, as it considers the structure of the seismic sequence not only as a magnitude values' oscillation, but also as a sequence of developmental stages that may begin much earlier .

collapsed and created graviquakes. We propose an evolutional seismogenic model of the Tiberina-Gubbio Valley. We believe that the graviquake model can be adopted to describe the seismotectonics and seismogenesis of other Apennine areas.
Abstract
The seismic sequence of the Chianti hills in Tuscany. The combination of these two tectonic structures forms right transtensive systems at a regional scale.
collapsed and created graviquakes. We propose an evolutional seismogenic model of the Tiberina-Gubbio Valley. We believe that the graviquake model can be adopted to describe the seismotectonics and seismogenesis of other Apennine areas.
