This works intends to start a wider reflection on the evolution of furniture production technique... more This works intends to start a wider reflection on the evolution of furniture production techniques, along with the evolution on the tools used. Also, the implications of industrialization and its perspective on furniture production, as well as some of the environmental and cognitive consequences are addressed. Reflection on the characteristics of craftwork allows to assess its contribute to furniture design, as well as its economic potential. The importance and innovative potential of crafts is observed, concluding that it is imperative to invest in craft teaching. Based on the typology of Portuguese furniture production company a model that seems to be suited to Portuguese needs and reality is a clear investment in craft teaching, namely in relation to furniture, promoting the interchange of knowledge between academia and craftspeople.

Refinou técnicas e elaborou tecnologias para transformar, inicialmente materiais e depois matérias-primas, e criou até máquinas que o substituíssem na realização dessas tarefas. Foi este o facto que provocou alterações radicais na produção, passou a ser predominantemente industrializada, e que instituiu a divisão entre a conceção e o fabrico de artefatos. Por sua vez esta divisão gerou um movimento antagónico que, por um lado, contaminou o conceito de artesanato e, por outro, criou as bases para o desenvolvimento do design. The advent of industrial production made it possible, for it contributed the rise of the Design professional, responsible for the ideation and project of products, filling the recently created gap between intent and machine production. For decades the seeds of post-industrial design have been identified by researchers, their bloom is now shown evident by growing number of people that try to avoid industrial goods. This has made the non-industrial market to become multimillionaire, attracting an increasing number of people to make products. Craftsmanship holds the roots of cultural variation and carries a long tradition of using sustainable materials and processes, values with increasing acknowledgement by the market.
