During rescue excavations some prehistoric settlements with traces of early of copper processing were uncovered. This initiated a thorough investigation of the copper ore deposits of Burgas, Rosen and Medni Rid that were mined until recently. Their archaeometallurgical investigation was a project of the Tübingen SFB 1070 ResourceCultures. The research results include an overview of the archaeological research along the southern Bulgarian coastal zone of the Black Sea and the now flooded sites in its shore area. The timeframe ranges from the earliest use of metals in the 5th millennium BC to the period of the 'Greek Colonisation' and later.

The present study discusses the set of gold jewellery originating from a 5th century BC tomb in the Kukova mound. These adornments are components of an original head and body decoration, a set typical for the Thracian elite. This set originates from two other graves of the Duvanli necropolis. The stylistic analysis points toward Greek, Macedonian and Thracian prototypes. The technological characteristics of the pieces of jewellery have been studied through a semi-quantitative analysis of the gold alloy by X-ray fluorescence. Observations of the artefacts under the microscope have also been carried out in order to diversify the methodology employed for the research of the genesis of Duvanli jewellery. The study added new ar...
