Thus, this paper proposes a model for planning marketing channels in agribusiness that also considers transaction costs. This model is developed in two steps, diagnostic and decision, and is applied to the olive oil agribusiness in Portugal. The diagnostic step includes analysis of the agribusiness chain value, marketing channels, transaction characteristics, and institutional environment. The decision step fits the information from the diagnostic into a qualitative cost–benefit analysis, based on a multi-criteria problem of ordering preferences.

A model to disaggregate the variable input costs based on the maximum entropy theory was developed. It was applied to the Alentejo region using data from the FADN network of 2008. Results show that entropy theory is a flexible and robust option for estimating cost allocation coefficients of agricultural activities in a context of incomplete information. Between model variants used, the model of generalized cross entropy had the best forecast capacity, once the estimated coefficients are closer to the real values.

A theoretical framework was developed and tested using survey data from a sample of the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey (GUESSS). The results suggest a positive effect of ambidexterity on firm performance, which is positively moderated by motivating factors, the number of co-owners and normative and cognitive institutions, such as power distance and university environment and program learning, respectively. The study provides important insights for policymakers to promote entrepreneurial education and clues for future research, as well as extends existing theory by offering insights on the moderator effects of individual and contextual factors on the relationship between ambidexterity and firm performance, assuming the benefits of the synergic effects of exploration and exploitation.

Therefore, taking into account the economics of transaction costs, this study aims to analyze the relationships that permeate the governance structure for the generation of bioenergy through swine farming waste in business models implemented in the Western Region of Paraná, Brazil, a region with significant production of pigs and a pioneer in the implementation of biogas production projects. The investigation strategy for this study was the case study methodology. Empirical data, analyzed qualitatively, were obtained through the analysis of contracts and interviews with power plant managers and pig producers. The main findings point to the evolution of business models for bioenergy generation, changes in the sector’s governance structure, and improvement in the contractual models used. Changes in the ...

Farming systems traditional of the Alentejo area and of the Mediterranean region are compared in terms of economic returns, environmental impacts and trade-offs. Methodological aspects for environmental impacts evaluation during cradle-to-gate of a product are assessed through two tools: Life Cycle Assessment and Input-Output analysis with environmental accounts. These tools reveal and quantify environmental occurring within supply chain of a good or service and define a solid base for their environmental performances assessment. The application of these two tools is believed to yield more benefits than if used separately. Such combination delivers solid results that can be used for an economic evaluation of environmental impacts. For each farming system it is developed a linear programming model that emphasizes the bio...

Sustainable agriculture is an important goal since resources need to be preserved for future generations. The recent agricultural policy orientations towards environmental concerns have also had consequences for Portuguese agriculture. The information provided by the 2019 Agricultural Census offers an opportunity to analyse the recent dynamics and establish rankings of municipalities related to agricultural sustainability. Sustainability in agriculture can be studied using different types of indicators, but its quantification and aggregation into an index is still difficult. This paper proposes an approach based on compromise programming to analyse sustainability considering the dynamics between the 2009 and 2019 Agricultural Census. This approach has three main steps: in the first one, the indicators are selected and a HJ-Biplot and Cluster analysis are carried o...

Consequently, it is an important topic for everyone: politicians, governments, labour unions, investors, employers, academics, students and citizens. This report, which is based on the data collected through the international project Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey (GUESSS), gives insights into the entrepreneurial intentions and activities among the 4178 participants in the GUESSS 2018 survey, from a total of 25 Portuguese higher education institutions (see the appendix for the list of the Portuguese participant institutions). In 2018, the Portuguese participation in the GUESSS project was coordinated by a team of professors from the Management Department of the School of Social Sciences, University of Évora, namely Rui Quaresma (coordinator), Jorge Casas Novas and Rui Fragoso, also researchers from Centre for Ad...

Its main objective is the development of an alternative economic model of socio-cultural innovation and creative practices with disadvantaged citizens. It aims to increase the participants income and improve the living conditions of the communities involved, namely migrant populations from the Lisbon metropolitan area, through the identification and mapping of techniques, arts and crafts developed by migrants from their cultural heritage.

The utilization of renewable energy and clean sources of energy is a characteristic of Brazil’s energy matrix. Recently, the production of energy through biogas—and biomass in general—started to gain force. The concessionaires of energy, as well, started to discipline its utilization and selling, creating an impediment to the commercialization of energy produced by micro or mini generation outside the free energy market, as well as a prohibition of binding the contracts to the value of electric energy. Even though, it is possible to create a network of contracts that interconnect the producers and the consumers. In this line, the theoretical-empirical method was used to conclude that the model’s difficulties—and specially the legal limitations—can be overcome by adopting a network of contracts capable of subjecting renewable energy generation to an energy compensation...
