This research has resulted in improved analytical methods and effective retrofit techniques to assess and enhance the performance of these structures. The methods were validated by a series of quasi-static tests conducted on one-story frame specimens as well as shake-table tests conducted on two 2/3-scale, three-story, two-bay, masonry-infilled, RC frames. This paper focuses on the observations from the shake-table tests and the further insight gained from a numerical study conducted with finite element models. The first shake-table test specimen had no retrofit measures, and the second had infill walls in the first and second stories strengthened with Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) and Fiber Reinforced Polymeric (FRP) overlays, respectively. The tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the retrofit measures. Finite element models that combine sm...

This produces strong earthquakes every 83±9 years in the Central part of the country, where 60% of the population lives and those of Magnitude 8 or higher occur every 10 years. The short interval between large earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 or larger (3 in the last 5 years) has shown that the Chilean seismic design practice has achieved almost "operational" performance level, despite the fact that the Chilean Code uses “life safety” performance level. This article presents a review of the current Chilean practice for the seismic design of concrete buildings based on the displacement demand records of the last three major earthquakes: Maule 2010 (Mw=8.8), Iquique 2014 (Mw=8.2) and Illapel 2015 (Mw=8.4). Conclusions are drawn for the definition and calibration of the Earthquake Design Levels and the Performance Levels for the new Chilean Code of Performance Based Seismic Design under development.

The two authors have careers that span over 50 years since they first began their professional relationship and therefore they can provide examples of major accomplishments in ground motion estimation at a specific building site and also the analysis of the building performance for this ground motion. The first author was the PhD adviser of the second author in the early 1970’s. Both authors’ careers include being professors who worked with their students to perform research. Their careers also include participation in actual evaluation and strengthening projects of existing buildings. This paper presents some of the progress that has evolved over the last half century in earthquake ground motion estimation and the two areas of structural analysis: Structural Mechanics Structural Analysis an...
