Poa annua is a cosmopolitan, cool-season grass species regarded as one of the most significant weeds of turfgrass. It is mainly controlled by herbicides; however, repeated use of herbicides in golf turf has resulted in the evolution of multiple-herbicide resistant P. annua. Four field experiments were performed in autumn and spring in golf turf to identify effective herbicide options to control multiple herbicide-resistant P. annua. In herbicide resistance screening, the trial site population (SA1) was found to be susceptible to amicarbazone and terbuthylazine, but resistant to simazine and metribuzin at the field rate of each herbicide. Consistent with the results of the pot study, the PSII-inhibiting herbicides amicarbazone and terbuthylazine provided the best control (80–100%) of P. annua in both autumn and spring trials with minimal damage to the turf. In contrast, the other two PSII-inhibiting herbicides, metribuzin and simazine, were relatively ineffective in controlling P. an...

Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used to assess genetic diversity and relationship among ten lentil varieties, namely Binamasur-1, Binamasur-2, Binamasur-3, Binamasur-4, BARImasur-1, BARImasur-2, BARImasur-3, BARImasur-4, BARImasur-5 and BARImasur-6. Genomic DNA was extracted from young leaves using mini CTAB method. Three individuals from each of the 10 varieties were analyzed using 3 random primers. Amplification with 3 (out of 10) random primers generated 20 RAPD markers of which 13 (65%) were considered as polymorphic. The highest proportion of polymorphic loci was 15% for Binamasur-2, Binamasur-3 and BARImasur-2. Nei's gene diversity value (0.9878) was the highest in case of BARImasur-6 and BARImasur-4 varietal pair whereas BARImasur-6 Vs Binamasur-1 was monomorphic in nature. Results of this investigation indicated relatively high level of genetic variation in Binamasur-1 and BARImasur-4 and BARImasur-6 compared to other varieties. High level of variet...

For selection of aromatic rice lines, twenty six (26) rice genotypes were evaluated for agronomic characteristics and aroma detection through sensory test and genotypic analysis using SSR markers. Grain quality and yield attributes were analyzed after harvesting the grain. Aroma was detected by 1.7% KOH as a sensory test. Based on sensory test, six genotypes were detected for having strong aroma; 7 for moderate aroma; 10 for slight aroma and 3 for no aroma. Aroma had significant and positive association with grain length-width ratio; significant and negative association with grain width, significant and negative association with gelatinization temperature, and no significant association with grain length. Three SSR primers viz; RM223, RM515 and RM342 were used for identifying fgr gene locus in 26 rice genotypes. The primer RM223 identified the fgr locus as homozygous condition for 6 as strong aromatic, 7 moderate aromatic, 10 slight aromatic and the rest 3 as non aromatic. The prime...

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during November 2008 to March 2009 to examine the effects of mimosa (Mimosa invisa) compost and phosphorus on the yield and yield components of lentil variety BARI Masur6. Two factors were: a) Mimosa invisa compost and b) phosphorus fertilizer. Mimosa invisa compost were used in four rates- 1 (M1), 5 (M2), 10 (M3) and 15 (M4) t ha-1. Five rates of phosphorus fertilizer were: ‘no’ phosphorus (P0), 25% RDP (P1), 50% RDP (P2), 75% RDP (P3) and 100% recommended dose phosphorus (TSP @ 85 kg ha-1) (P4). The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. Mimosa invisa compost had significant effect on the crop characters except number of branches plant-1. The highest seed yield (1435.33 kg ha-1) was observed in M2 treatment (5 t ha-1) and the lowest seed yield (1220 kg ha-1) was observed in M4 treatment (15 t ha-1). Phosphorus had...

A field experiment was the effects of different cut corm and plant spacing on growth, flowering, corm and cornel production of gladiolus. The highest yield of flowers (2.92 lac/ 3650 USD) was recorded from the treatment combination of 1/2 cut corm and closer spacing (25 x 15 cm). The highest yields of corm (32.33 t/ha) was obtained from the treatment combination of whole corm and closest spacing (25 x 10 cm) and highest yields of cormel (1.13 t/ha) from the treatment combination of 1/2 cut corm and the closest (25 x 10 cm) spacing. Significant interaction effects were observed between cut corm and plant spacing for 80% emergence and number of florets per spike and found to be the best for the production of good quality spike, corm and cormel of gladiolus.

Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) is a problematic annual weed in established turf where the intensive use of herbicides has resulted in the evolution of herbicide resistance. In 2017, 31 populations of P. annua suspected to be resistant to herbicides commonly used to control this weed in turf were collected from golf courses across southeastern Australia to check the resistance status to different herbicide groups. All populations were found to be resistant to multiple turf herbicides. Dose–response experiments confirmed resistance to propyzamide, simazine, rimsulfuron, foramsulfuron, endothall, and pinoxaden. Levels of resistance to rimsulfuron (>56-fold), foramsulfuron (>19-fold), endothall (>7-fold), and pinoxaden (>4.3-fold) compared with the susceptible population were high, but levels of resistance to propyzamide (>2-fold) and simazine (>2-fold) were lower. Considerable variation in resistance to endothall and pinoxaden was observed among the populations of P....
