Patient: Female, 52-year-old Final Diagnosis: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease Symptoms: Cervical lymphadenopathy • fever Medication: — Clinical Procedure: — Specialty: Infectious Diseases • Rheumatology Objective: Unusual clinical course Background: Kikuchi-Fujimoto (KFD) disease is a rare benign syndrome of necrotizing lymphadenopathy with distinctive histologic characteristics and was first reported in 1972. It is usually manifested by painful cervical lymphadenopathy and fever in young people, predominantly in females. KFD is a self-limiting disease and recurrence is rare. Case Report: We present the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with recurrent cervical lymphadenopathy 3 times in 13 years. Diagnosis of KFD was made by excisional lymph node biopsy, showing typical histopathologic features. She was treated with oral prednisone, with a favorable response. Conclusions: In patients with recurrent lymphadenopathy, excisional biopsy can lead to definitive diagnosis and directed tre...

Background: Many Anatomical Pathology laboratories do not have a barcoding system or an anatomical pathology laboratory information system that allow for better workflow by tracking of specimens and orders, quality control documentation, statistics calculation, search and data retrieval for research purposes. Aim: This paper will show how Google sheet can be used as an alternative using the checkboxes, the electronic edit history and other features. Materials and Methods: Google accounts were created then Google sheets were designed with specific details and the daily quality log was designed to show compliances to national and international standards. Results: Descriptive templates allowed for tracking of specimens and pathologists’ requisitions, quality control documentation, statistics calculation, search and data retrieval for research purposes. Conclusion: Google sheet can be used in the absence of barcoding systems or an anatomical pathology laboratory information system for t...

To measure the prevalence of the most common causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), we studied the records of 248 hemodialysis patients in the Jeddah Kidney Center in December 2000. We found that the majority of cases of ESRD were of unknown etiology (42.7%). Hypertension was the most common known cause (36.3%) followed by diabetes mellitus (14.5%). We conclude that hypertension and diabetes constitute the most frequently known causes of ESRD among hemodialyzed (HD) patients in the Jeddah region.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the hemodialysis (HD) population in Jeddah and its risk factors. We studied 248 patients on HD in the Jeddah Kidney Center, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The overall prevalence of HCV among these patients was 72.6%. Hepatitis C positive males (77.2%) were more than hepatitis C positive females (65.7%) (p< 0.05). A significantly increasing annual prevalence of HCV infection among HD patients was found. It ranged from 16.4% among patients who were on HD for one year to 94.5% among those on HD for three or more years (p< 0.05). Also, 78% of those who utilized more than one center acquired HCV infection compared to 64.3% of those who were treated exclusively at the Jeddah Kidney Center, (p< 0.05). In this study, 75.8% of HCV positive patients had received blood transfusions while 61.1% of HCV positive patients had never received blood transfusion, (p< 0.05).

The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among the hemodialysis (HD) patients at the Nephrology and Urology Research Center, Tehran, Iran, and identify the potential risk factors. A total of 112 patients on HD in our two dialysis units were studied. The mean duration of follow-up was 27 ą 27 months (range, 6-132). All study subjects were HCV-negative at entry to the study and were tested for anti-HCV antibody by ELISA II every six months thereafter. Positive samples were re-examined ...
