Abstract This paper (which is based in part on a contribution to the 1984 Societas Linguistica Eu... more Abstract This paper (which is based in part on a contribution to the 1984 Societas Linguistica Europaea meeting in Manchester/Salford) explores the complex notion of 'interlingual equivalence', postulating that equivalence-seeking must be viewed not as a set of static correspondence relations between pairs of independent linguistic systems, but as a dynamic process which is part and parcel of bilingual code-switching: an approximative act rather than a matching taxonomy.

Dr Reinhard Hartmann is Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics at the University of Exeter... more Dr Reinhard Hartmann is Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics at the University of Exeter, and Director of the Dictionary Research Centre. He has published extensively on lexicography. He is the founder and current president of the European Association for Lexicography and one of the editors of the international Lexicographica Series Maior. He has recently launched a postgraduate diploma course in lexicography offered concurrently at Exeter, Lille and Amsterdam.
