We are pre-eminently narrative beings. Our lives and our interactions consist of fragments of experiences, how we interpret and make them our own, but also how we communicate this to others. When writing, reading and talking about the past, we engage our narrative selves in a special way: we try to understand the present by grasping for something that has the character of having already happened. But everything we tell stories about still lives. They live in the story itself, in the passion and the needs of the narrator to keep it alive, but sometimes they also live in other ways in our body. I look at a few fragments of stories that show other ways of narrating in Curaçao's history, and, as part thereof Afro-Curaçaoan history and the history of slavery.

The introduction of more self-governance in the 1950's spurred both a moralist and disablist rhetoric from the Catholic church. Africanist discourse however, has been present in several ways as a contestation of both Colonial power in general and the Catholic Church in particular. The discourse on Africanness and the continuities of African cultural expression, is traced in this paper as a popular identity marker.
