---------------------------------------------------------------------------- As the main form of authentication of charters used during the Middle Ages, seals were also a representation of those who owned them and as such are considered as symbols of identification and affirmation on their own. Widely spread in the world of cathedrals, they were used by bishops, chapters, dignitaries and canons, as well as the episcopal curia. The seals of this ecclesiastical universe are the subject of this paper, which analyzes and emphasizes its symbolic and representative dimension, showing the paramount importance of seals as iconographic elements that allow us to better understand how the secular clergy and their institutions recognized themselves and showed their power, as well as the progressive development of the notion of identity, not only of the group but also personal, over the medieval centuries. Keywords: Sigillography; Secular clergy; Iconography; Symbol; Power.
