With the plethora of problems facing the Nigerian undergraduates, it becomes necessary to find out how the Nigerian undergraduate spends his time. Two thousand four hundred full time undergraduates formed the sample of this study. Simple percentage, mean and rank order were the statistical tools adopted for the analysis of data. The study ex-facie revealed that the faculty that recorded the highest mean hour for private study and assignment did not invariably record the least mean hour for leisure activities. The preferred leisure activity that ranked 1st was listening to music. The study also revealed that a majority of Nigerian undergraduates spend 26 hours and above a week on personal study and assignments. It was recommended among other things that the authorities of Nigerian universities and non government organizations should provide facilities for indoor games in the halls of residence. Also recommended is that social life skills should be taught in schools so that students know how to manage their time effectively. INTRODUCTION Time is one of those limited resources used in the achievement of life goals. Time as a resource is fixed in the sense that each person has only 24 hours a day. For this reason, it cannot be accumulated for another day's use as material resources. Activities postponed to the next day therefore become an infringement on the next day and this can lead to accumulation of work. Many students are victims of this. The work gets so accumulated that they get overwhelmed, stressed and overcome by the work and the resultant effect is carryover of courses which eventually lead to spending extra years in the university, thus leading to wastage. The quality of life of an individual depends on his use of the human and non human resources at his disposal. Lawhon (1984) confirmed that time is limited and scarce in its use. It is however one of the most important human resources available to individuals and families irrespective of their socio-cultural, economic and intellectual backgrounds. Therefore, students should consider resource allocations and decisions affecting the limited amount of time available to them to carry out their daily activities which include personal study, assignments and leisure effectively. There is the need to evolve strategies for creative use of leisure in our rapidly changing society and working patterns become imperative especially after working hours and at weekends. THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE This work is based on the Pickle Jar theory which is the latest theory of Time Management taught in a leadership course and developed by Jeremy Wright. The Pickle Jar theory is all about balance. You make time for everything and everything simply fits well where it is supposed to fit. This theory is predicated on the fact that each of us has many large priorities in our lives. We also have other things which we enjoy doing such as leisure activities sleep and rest. According to this theory, none of these are bad, after all we need the whole gamut of these objects from large priorities to times of rest in order to feel truly fulfilled. This theory also emphasizes the need to figure out one's large priorities during the day and let other priorities such as leisure activities, the unexpected and little things that are to be done everyday, e.g. checking the e-mail, fill the gaps. If this is done, then one has a more open day. One will therefore get things done earlier, one is more relaxed and schedule is more fluid. In this work, the student has many activities competing for his time such as attending lectures, studying and carrying out assignments as well as engaging in leisure activities among other things. So there is the need to prioritize to ensure that there is an adequate spread of time to attend to the competing activities. Adewusi (1988) defines leisure as being distinct from idleness and free time corresponds only to the activity to which the individual may freely devote himself outside the needs and obligations of his occupation, his family and society for his relaxation, diversion and development. …

That is why governments at all levels and individuals invest heavily on it. Some obtain it through the full-time outlet and others through the part-time basis. The sandwich is specially designed for up-skills of education workforce. Four universities located in Mid-Western States of Nigeria formed the population of the study while two of them where isolated for study which covered 2001/02 to 2009/10 academic sessions. The variables of interest which were location and gender were examined. It was found that there was spatial variation in the supply of admission places in the part-time programmes. Growth was recorded though more females were supplied admission places in the sandwich programmes during the period covered by the study. Suggestions were made for improvement

The diminishing culture of the extended family system and the need for both parents to be in employment coupled with the need to provide access and ensure equity in educational provision have necessitated the need for early childhood education in public school in Nigeria. The paper argued that adequate fund is a prerequisite for good teacher preparation, provision of appropriate and good quality facilities, stimulating learning materials, regular supervision and monitoring of early childhood education programmes and school effectiveness. In order to achieve these scenario, the following recommendations were proposed for policy options: 15% of the constituency allowance of all national lawmakers and 10% of that of state of assembly lawmakers should be committed to providing academic and non...

One thousand parents of kindergarten pupils during the period 2004/2005 session formed the sample of this study. The study adopted the ex post facto research design. Simple percentage, averages and rank order were the statistical tools adopted for the analysis of data. The study prima facea revealed that parents spent N46, 450 (forty six thousand, four hundred and fifty naira) in order for their children to get kindergarten one education (KG 1) per child per annum in private schools. KG II was N48, 150 and KG. III was N50, 380. In all the programmes, school fees ranked first among the items of cost constituting over 30% of the total private cost. Also revealed is that a...

Universities are the key institutions for preserving knowledge from the past as well as producing knowledge for the future. Governments rely on higher education and research institutions to provide both advice and manpower to manage key organizations of society, and industries turn to them to provide cutting-edge knowledge to develop new products and the personnel capable of managing production units. (Varghese, 2002). Eliminating gender disparities in schools is one of the main goals of the Dakar "Framework for Action". The Goal 5 of the Dakar Framework for Action emphasized that the attainment of Education for All (EFA) by 2015 would require the world's commitment in "eliminating gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005 and achieving gender equality in education by 2015, with a focus on ensuring girls' full and equal access to and achievement in basic education of good quality" (UNESCO, 2000). The education of women has become a global issue ever since it was realized that women as mothers have the very first contact with their children even before the teachers and so possess potentials to be role models to their children. The University of Benin was founded in 1970 as Institute of Technology and converted to a full-fledged university in 1972. Today, there are eleven (11) faculties, fifty seven (57) departments and five (5) Institutes (Omoifo, 1998). UNESCO (2003) revealed that in Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia, there were no gender differences in the achievement for reading and mathematics in primary schools. In addition, in Botswana, Mauritius, Seychelles and South Africa, girls significantly outperformed boys at least in reading if not both. In these countries, as far as the upper primary level is concerned, girls were equally talented if not more. However, girls participation in secondary and tertiary level was lower than the male participation. Saito (2004) hypothesized that there might be a vast amount of female talent left capitalized if their participation in the higher level is not comparable to that of boys. Despite women increasing participation in the labour market, they are still disadvantaged in the mainstream of economic life. Nozawa (2004) reported that with limited access to stable and well paid employment, female participation is often confined to 'feminine' work, to low-paid less visible jobs in the informal sector and to subsistence agriculture. Globally, women earn 20 to 30 per cent less than men while women make up 70 per cent of the world's more than 1 billion absolute poor. Nozawa (2004) further reported that in most regions of the world, female enrolment in secondary level Technical and Vocational Education represents less than half of the total. This implies therefore that in most regions of the world fewer girls have the opportunities to participate in technical activities. It is at this level that interest and love for technical activities are built. This may eventually translate into fewer enrolments in technically based courses like engineering. Even among the few girls that opt for vocational courses they tend to choose fields that are considered more 'feminine' and less technical such as secretarial studies, catering, etc. Gender equity in terms of enrolment has been identified as a serious problem in Nigerian higher education system. Okebukola (2002) revealed that of the total population of 526,780 from Universities that provided enrolment data only 178,995 are females. This is a mere 34% of the gross enrolment data. Makhubu (1998) pointed out that there are mainstream academic areas in which women excel. These include the humanities, social sciences and the life sciences. She also complained that the under representation of women in science and technology is a serious bottleneck in endeavors for building scientific capacities in Africa. These assertions need to be verified hence the need for this study. …
