Most of the micro-level studies on abortion reach a misleading conclusion that abortions are excl... more Most of the micro-level studies on abortion reach a misleading conclusion that abortions are exclusively a method of family limitation or family planning. A study conducted in four villages of Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu contradicts this orthodoxy and opens up spaces for looking at the question of reproductive rights anew. Women in the study villages consider abortion as a necessity to negotiate the harsh realities in their work places, and deal with domestic violence and different social conditions and beliefs.

However, studies often tend to engage only with national-level collectivities and represent women’s movements’ constituencies, objectives and strategies as homogenous across different histories and cultures. This tendency has not only led to the lack of our understanding of regional and local processes that have shaped the women’s movements, but also a lack of knowledge about how women activists and leaders negotiate and rework their possibilities within the micro-level sociopolitical processes. In contrast to this trend, Raka Ray’s immensely valuable book on women’s movements in Mumbai and Kolkata emphasises the importance of understanding and analysing the women’s movements as embedded in regional histories and political culture as represented in what she calls the
