Diese Frage soll anhand von zwei Metropolregionen – dem Ruhrgebiet und Istanbul – die durch ihre Migrationsge- schichte geprägt sind, beantwortet werden. Die Geschichte des Ruhrgebietes lässt sich nicht erzählen, ohne auf die Zuwanderung von Menschen aus dem Ausland einzu- gehen. In der zweiten Hälfte des letzten Jahrhunderts wurden zunehmend Menschen aus der Türkei angeworben, um die Nach- frage nach Arbeitskräften in der Montanindustrie zu befriedigen. Die heutige Bevölkerungsstruktur im Ruhrgebiet spiegelt diese Migrationsgeschichte wider. Die Metropole Ruhr ist daher geprägt von kultureller Vielfalt und ihre Zukunftsfähigkeit basiert auf der daraus erwachsenden Innovationsdynamik. Das Symposium wird am Beispiel von zwei Metropolregionen der Frage nachgehen, wie sich Diversität darstellt und wie sie kom- muniziert beziehungsweise vermarktet wird. Einerseits gilt das Interesse den ökonomischen und den sozialen Problemen und Chancen dieser Vielfalt. Andererseits sind endogene Potentiale relevant, die sich in der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung ausdrücken und in Hinblick auf ihre Nutzung diskutiert werden sollen.
