Inhabiting dry and fire-prone environments provides specific challenges to ferns, and the traits of fern spores in relation to these challenges are not well understood. Their shallow, dense and fibrous root networks mean that the loss or establishment of fern populations in disturbed ecosystems may influence soil stability, and indicate a keystone role in ecosystem function and ecological restoration.     What is the role of practical thought in determining the intentional action that is performed? Donald Davidson’s influential answer to this question is that thought plays an efficient-causal role: intentional actions are those events that have the correct causal pedigree in the agent's beliefs and desires. But the Causal Theory of Action has always been plagued with the problem of “deviant causal chains,” in which the right action is caused by the right mental state but in the wrong way. This paper addresses an alternative approach to understanding intentional action inspired by G.E.M. Anscombe, interpreting that view as casting practical thought in the role of formal rather than efficient cause of action and thereby avoiding the problem of deviant (efficient) causal chains.     There is a puzzle about how to understand the conclusion of a successful instance of practical reasoning. Do the considerations adduced in reasoning rationalize the particular doing of an action, as Aristotle is sometimes interpreted as claiming? Or does reasoning conclude in the formation of an attitude – an intention, say – that has an action-type as its content? This paper attempts to clarify what is at stake in that debate and defends the latter view against some of its critics.

    Zfp516, a brown fat (BAT)-enriched and cold-inducible transcription factor, promotes transcription of UCP1 and other BAT-enriched genes for non-shivering thermogenesis. Here, we identify lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) as a direct binding partner of Zfp516. We show that, through interaction with Zfp516, LSD1 is recruited to UCP1 and other BAT-enriched genes, such as PGC1α, to function as a coactivator by demethylating H3K9. We also show that LSD1 is induced during brown adipogenesis and that LSD1 and its demethylase activity is required for the BAT program. Furthermore, we show that LSD1 ablation in mice using Myf5-Cre alters embryonic BAT development. Moreover, BAT-specific deletion of LSD1 via the use of UCP1-Cre impairs the BAT program and BAT development, making BAT resemble WAT, reducing thermogenic activity and promoting obesity. Finally, we demonstrate an in vivo requirement of the Zfp516-LSD1 interaction for LSD1 function in BAT gene activation.

The genre, which had always required its female inhabitants to maintain an aloof and icy silence, was not accustomed to female voices. Certainly a speaker like the narrator of Barrett Browning's sonnets, loudly proclaiming her right to adopt postures of adoration and unworthiness toward a male love object, had never before disturbed its rarefied spaces.     ABSTRACT Individuals of the same species, population and generation frequently exhibit sub-maximal and significant genetic and phenotypic variation in their rate of development, showing slow and fast developers. Fast developers commonly have higher foraging and predation rates than slow developers. The consequence of such differences and foraging for the efficacy of biocontrol species remains under-explored. Slow and fast developers from a population of the ladybird, Propylea dissecta were separated and selected experimentally for F15 generations, and the predatory response of fourth instar larvae of control and experimentally selected slow and fast developers was then assessed at differing levels of prey (pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum) and conspecific predator abundance. All individuals, whether slow or fast developers, showed a Type-II functional response, decrease in proportion of prey consumed with increasing prey biomass and an increase in proportion of prey consumed with increasing predator density. The proportion of prey consumed was highest in experimental fast developers and lowest in experimental slow developers. Attack rate was highest and handling time longest in slow developers of control/experimental groups. Mutual interference was least while area of discovery was highest in experimental fast developers. Thus, selection of fast developers for F15 generations led to higher functional responses, slower attack rates and faster prey consumption. This lower mutual interference and high searching efficiency indicates that they can be experimentally selected and used for better control of the pea aphids. This study is the first attempt to evaluate predatory responses of selected lines of an aphidophagous ladybird.

    This article in to study the association of structural abnormalities of the urinary tract in children with urinary tract infection (UTI) using ultrasound examination. 262 children with culture proven urinary tract infection were studied. Antibiotics were given as per sensitivity pattern. All children had an ultrasound of the abdomen done within 3 weeks. A micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) was done in those with abnormalities of the lower urinary tract detected on ultrasound, as well as in those who had recurrence of infection, after a normal ultrasound. IVU and renal isotope scans were done in selected cases. All children were followed up until one year after the study period. Fifty-four patients had an underlying urinary tract anomaly; 42 were picked up by ultrasound and 12 by MCU. 22.9% of males and 15.9% of females had anomaly of the urinary tract.     The integrity of polarized epithelia is critical for development and human health. Many questions remain concerning the full complement and the function of the proteins that regulate cell polarity. Here we report that the Drosophila FERM proteins Yurt (Yrt) and Coracle (Cora) and the membrane proteins Neurexin IV (Nrx-IV) and Na(+),K(+)-ATPase are a new group of functionally cooperating epithelial polarity proteins. This 'Yrt/Cora group' promotes basolateral membrane stability and shows negative regulatory interactions with the apical determinant Crumbs (Crb). Genetic analyses indicate that Nrx-IV and Na(+),K(+)-ATPase act together with Cora in one pathway, whereas Yrt acts in a second redundant pathway. Moreover, we show that the Yrt/Cora group is essential for epithelial polarity during organogenesis but not when epithelial polarity is first established or during terminal differentiation. This property of Yrt/Cora group proteins explains the recovery of polarity in embryos lacking the function of the Lethal giant larvae (Lgl) group of basolateral polarity proteins. We also find that the mammalian Yrt orthologue EPB41L5 (also known as YMO1 and Limulus) is required for lateral membrane formation, indicating a conserved function of Yrt proteins in epithelial polarity.

    Severe hyperkalemia is a medical emergency and occurs due to a variety of underlying illnesses. We present a 7 day old neonate who presented with life threatening hyperkalemia due to pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA1). The clinical picture resembled congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Very aggressive management including peritoneal dialysis was required to control hyperkalemia. It is important to differentiate PHA1 from CAH since the former does not respond to corticosteroid therapy and may require peritoneal dialysis for control of hyperkalemia. A discussion on the types, clinical course, and management of pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 is presented.

    To correlate electroencephalogram (EEG), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain with neurological outcome at 12 months in term neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Prospective observational study. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in a tertiary care teaching hospital. The study was conducted between June 2010 and November 2011. Consecutive term neonates with perinatal asphyxia and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy were the subjects. All babies were managed as per standard protocol. EEG was done as soon as the baby was stable and CT brain within 7 days. MRI was done at 3 months. Neurodevelpmental assessment was done at 12 months. Of the 31 babies, four died and one was lost to follow-up. Neurodevelopmental at 12 months of age was normal in 15 babies. EEG was normal in six babies and all of them had a normal neurodevelopment.     Episodic memory deficits are proposed as a potential intermediate phenotype of schizophrenia. We examined deficits in visual episodic memory and associated brain activation differences among early course schizophrenia (n=22), first-degree relatives (n=16) and healthy controls without personal or family history of psychotic disorders (n=28). Study participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging on a 3T scanner while performing visual episodic memory encoding and retrieval task. We examined in-scanner behavioral performance evaluating response time and accuracy of performance. Whole-brain BOLD response differences were analyzed using SPM5 correcting for multiple comparisons. There was an incremental increase in response time among the study groups (healthy controls<first-degree relatives<schizophrenia) with no differences in accuracy for encoding. Response time for retrieval was significantly increased in schizophrenia subjects compared to healthy controls with no difference in accuracy. Although there were no significant differences in BOLD responses for the encoding task, we noted increased BOLD response to retrieval in the prefrontal regions (Brodmann areas 9 and 8), thalamus and insula among the schizophrenia subjects compared to healthy controls, and first-degree relatives. Familial risk for schizophrenia may be associated with qualitatively similar but quantitatively milder abnormalities in visual episodic memory retrieval but not for encoding in the prefrontal cortex and thalamus.

    Preduodenal portal vein (PDPV) is a rare anomaly in which the portal vein passes anterior to the duodenum rather than posteriorly. Generally asymptomatic, PDPV may rarely cause duodenal obstruction or may coexist with other anomalies. We report a neonate who presented with duodenal obstruction and was found out to have 3 coexisting anomalies, each of which can lead to duodenal obstruction independently-PDPV, midgut malrotation, and duodenal web. A duodenoduodenostomy and a Ladd procedure were done, and the child recovered uneventfully. The mechanism of obstruction, interesting metabolic aberrations observed, outcome, and relevant literature are presented.

    The heterodimeric Na,K-ATPase has been implicated in vertebrate and invertebrate epithelial cell junctions, morphogenesis and oncogenesis, but the mechanisms involved are unclear. We previously showed that the Drosophila Na,K-ATPase is required for septate junction (SJ)formation and that of the three β-subunit loci, only Nrv2 isoforms support epithelial SJ barrier function and tracheal tube-size control. Here we show that Nrv1 is endogenously co-expressed with Nrv2 in the epidermis and tracheal system, but Nrv1 has a basolateral localization and appears to be excluded from the Nrv2-containing SJs. When the normally neuronal Nrv3 is expressed in epithelial cells, it does not associate with SJs. Thus, theβ-subunit is a key determinant of Na,K-ATPase subcellular localization as well as function. However, localization of the Na,K-ATPase to SJs is not sufficient for junctional activity because although several Nrv2/Nrv3 chimericβ-subunits localize to SJs, only those containing the extrac...
