Against this backdrop, this study provides a historical understanding of societal behaviour and responses to pandemics. Inferences are primarily drawn from a literature review from the past and present. The present analysis also reflects the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the world and India while providing a novel perspective to understand public health practices in a global context. It suggests the need for a more synchronised health response in pandemics while highlighting the uncertainties and challenges with historical evidence and comparisons to the ongoing pandemic. An emphasis is on learning from historical evidence and ascertaining how these retrospective diagnoses help make arguments about health and illness in our present moment.
This study tries to establish a conceptual and empirical understanding of the precarity of work i... more This study tries to establish a conceptual and empirical understanding of the precarity of work in the platform economy using food aggregators as illustrations and in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet access and smartphone facilitated the creation of platform aggregators, which emerged as a new workspace for young workers in India. However, food aggregators term these workers as 'delivery partners'; this changes the employer-employee relations and allows companies to avoid liabilities and reduce costs. This has led to systematic exploitation and dismal working conditions for food delivery workers. Further, Workers at platforms suffer from low wages (and benefit), absence (or lack) of welfare measures, and discriminatory practices. The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant lockdown have further aggravated the precarity of on-demand work and workers. Pandemic has shown that with loss of livelihood and income, the notion of autonomy and flexibility at work is meant for the privileged few. This precarious situation of food delivery workers calls for affirmative action in terms of regulations, social security, and protection.

This paper tries to understand the co-operative model for contract farming in the broadest sense of input supply, information transfer, and improved marketing channels at all levels. It uses the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. (Amul) as illustrative of an ideal model of dairy co-operative for furthering the concept of co-operative based contract farming. This paper tries to address the subject both conceptually and empirically. The study finds that co-operative led contract farming can be an important instrument in the development and application of best practices and realisation of reasonable prices for farmers.

It tries to draw attention toward detrimental modification in laws and actual implementation in the backdrop of judicial and executive practice. Implications in terms of socio-economic–legal–environmental taken together raise a question on the overall idea of SEZs. As evidences suggest, there are detrimental effects of SEZ operations in various forms.

The analysis is based on secondary data sourced from the Reserve Bank of India, Census and Economic and Political Weekly Research Foundation. It captures the data for a period of 20 years (1991-2011). An initial review indicates internal migration in the form of intra-state migration is very high compare to interstate migration. The analysis of convergence/divergence suggests dispersion among states has increased in the concerned period. Similarly, absolute βconvergence indicate that rich states are growing faster than poor states. However, when conditional convergence is tested by various variables, conditional convergence among states is evident. However, migration and literacy rate as important indicator not producing the expected results, as migration which is expected to be negatively correlated to economic growth, is positive. The coefficient of the initial level of per capita income is found to be statistically significant, implying conditional convergence across Indian states during 1991-2011. Further, policy makers need to consider migration, literacy rate, investment, and population growth as means to reduce economic disparities among states. Moreover, migration should be encouraged for economic growth and broader convergence.

Public distribution system which is an outdated system and its inefficiency in achieving the objective is not hidden. As there other forms of agricultural distribution system are visible such as contract farming but this model is also not devoid of exploitation of farmers. Development of horticultural sector should be accompanied by the growth of agro-processing industry. There is a need to improve postharvest operations related to handling, storage and marketing of fresh and processed agri produce. This sector needs to be developed as an organized industry and has to be managed collectively by all the stakeholders with farmers as the entrepreneurs. This study is based on secondary data. There is wide research gap in this sector, having such potential and prospectus for overall growth there is not much research in this field. The paper concludes that efficient supply chain plays very important role for development and contemporary issue for agriculture therefore; government action must address the issue of infrastructure development to achieve the objective of food security for all. The study suggests that Special Economic Zones policy has attracted a considerable amount of export-oriented investment and production, employment creation, and technical know-how. However, the policy has not met the desired results considering the objective of economic development. Assessment leads to understanding that competitiveness of domestic firms and linkages with foreign affiliates can be strengthened by the adoption of institutional restructuring to create the conducive environment for further industrialization. It may lead to related spillovers to have positive impacts on the overall economy.

This very fragility requires us to view labour laws and possible reforms using conceptual frames that are not preoccupied with de jure legislation but rather focus on the actual implementation of the law considering judicial and executive practice. Various factors taken together complemented by empirical work in Gujarat reflect that while labour laws are supposed to be operational in a special economic zones (SEZ), they are almost absent in practice. This study is based on both theoretical and empirical methods. This study suggests systematic non-implementation of labour welfare measures that have a negative implication on workers in each and every way possible. This has led the workers in SEZs to earn their living in an atmosphere of threat, fear and uncertainty.

The study also tries to examine microfinance model and implications in the context of various initiatives taken by the government and non-government agencies in Gujarat supported by field evi-dences. The present study relied on both theoretical and empirical methodologies. Field data comprised 225-sample size, collected through systematic sampling in Gujarat; secondary data has been compiled from relevant print and electronic sources. Findings suggest that microfinance interventions should not be limited to credit deployment; rather, they should focus on group formation, savings, livelihood promotion, enterprise development and marketing of produce. The paper concludes that microfinance plays an important role in socioeconomic development.

Findings: Most of the literature has indicated that the agricultural supply chain, starting from the input to the consumer, requires integration in order to achieve the objective of an efficient and effective supply chain mechanism. An efficient supply chain plays a very important role in the development of the agricultural sector. Therefore, the government and corporate sectors must address the issues of integration, infrastructure development, and information technology and management to achieve the objective of a feasible agricultural sector which will lead to food security for all. Innovations in postharvest technology and particularly in the development of infrastructure could help achieve this goal. Directions for future research: Greater emphasis should be placed on problem oriented research, which employs integrated approaches to solve postharvest issues. Apart from the missing links in our understanding and implementation of agricultural food supply chains, proper linkages must be established in the agriculture and processing sectors. The enactment of SEZ Act 2005 allows the Government to transfer the land acquired for public purpose under Land Acquisition Act to the private companies for development. For private firms land turning in to most significant incentive for being part of SEZ scheme and profit maximisation. It has been observed that large part of acquired land ends up in the hands of the real estate companies rather than intended productive sectors of industry and infrastructure. Land is the principal source of livelihood in an agrarian economy. Forcible acquisition and transfer of land to corporates leads to large scale unemployment and displacement especially when large part of tract remains unutilised. It raises many questions on objective and process of establishment of SEZs. The absence of land use the policy is primarily culprit for faulty diversion of land agriculture along with underutilisation of available land. The extreme nature of these SEZs needs to be analysed through proper policy making.

Different aspects of economic growth and social indicators have been observed. Theoretical and empirical evidences suggest that there is a positive relationship between economic growth and social development. However, the economic development has not been necessarily accompanied adequately by social development, especially in case of Gujarat. It is reinforced by the Human Development Index (HDI) position of Gujarat. Kerala has performed positively in terms of social indicators but economy has been in disarray, as it is ranked among bottom half of the country. This study is based on secondary data gathered from several government and international organizations. The article concludes by arguing that the governments should be equally concerned about both social development and economic development
