Gli studi ripubblicati in questo volume riconfermano intatta l'attualità delle conclusioni in essi acquisite e si impongono soprattutto quale modello di un metodo di ricerca nell'ambito specialistico della Papirologia. Le tematiche privilegiate dall'autrice scandiscono le tre parti del volume: in "Storia, natura e metodi della Papirologia" risulta illuminato, con la singolare lucidità che può derivare solo da una ininterrotta frequentazione del materiale papiraceo, lo specifico della disciplina; la prospettiva egiziana dei "Cinque imperatori secondo i papiri" arricchisce il panorama storico di particolari non recuperabili da altre fonti; i diciotto contributi dedicati ai "Problemi sociali e amministrativi" si confrontano sia con vicende epocali nella storia dell'Impero sia con aspetti istituzionali o consuetudinari propri della peculiare realtà egiziana.

Il volume appare dopo nove anni dalla ristampa delle “Memorie sull’Egitto e specialmente sui costumi delle donne orientali e gli harem scritte durante il suo soggiorno in quel paese (1819-1828)” di Amalia Nizzoli. Nelle “Memorie” la figura del marito rimaneva sostanzialmente in ombra. Egli è invece il protagonista principale di questa agile e informata biografia delineata da Sergio Daris. Fondandosi su molti documenti d’archivio rimasti inediti e su articoli di stampa apparsi nei primi decenni del diciannovesimo secolo, Daris ricostruisce la vita del Nizzoli, personaggio che, come scrive l’autore nell’introduzione “rappresenta un passaggio obbligato per ogni ricostruzione che intenda recuperare, con qualche completezza, il quadro delle attività di esplorazione e di ricerca in Egitto che, negli anni tra il 1815 e il 1830, diedero avvio alla fondazione di una nuova disciplina, sullo slancio della personale iniziativa di figure che hanno contrassegnato un’epoca”.

Sergio Daris è stato ordinario di Papirologia nella Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università degli Studi di Trieste. Ha svolto un’intensa opera di ricerca nell’ambito degli studi papirologici, con numerose edizioni di testi letterari e documenti inediti, e ha affrontato molti settori della problematica papirologica. IL suo nome è legato in particolare al Dizionario dei nomi geografici e topografici dell’Egitto greco- romano”, iniziato da A. Calderini nel 1935
Il volume continua la serie degli aggiornamenti già pubblicati del Dizionario dei nomi geografici... more Il volume continua la serie degli aggiornamenti già pubblicati del Dizionario dei nomi geografici e topografici dell'Egitto greco-romano (1935 - 1996), iniziato nel 1935 da Aristide Calderini. L'impostazione dell'opera segue quella adottata nei volumi precedentemente editi. Il materiale utilizzato proviene, nella quasi totalità, dalle pubblicazioni degli anni 1994 - 2001. L'entità delle aggiunte prova il considerevole incremento dei dati e il conseguente arricchimento delle specifiche informazioni: nuovi territori della provincia egiziana (il Delta, il Deserto Orientale, le Oasi libiche) in questi anni sono stati meglio conosciuti anche per questo aspetto. In questo Supplemento, oltre alle correzioni a lemmi già editi, vi sono inseriti lemmi che in precedenza non avevano trovato posto nella regolare sequenza alfabetica, come per esempio Ossirinco.

Le voci nuove sono riconoscibili per la presenza delle sezioni fondamentali: citazione, denominazione, localizzazione, mentre le aggiunte e le correzioni riguardano, di norma, singole sezioni. Nella relativa bibliografia per le voci già registrate precedentemente è segnalato il rinvio interno al Dizionario per facilitarne una rapida consultazione.
