While embracing traditional humanities traits and value of social concern, the teachers in fields of humanities and social science (HSS) have no alternatives other than elevating their academic research capability in order to sustain their competitive edge in this global trend. The issue as to what the HSS teachers in Taiwan could do to overcome hurdles of doing research while trying to boost their own research capability and get their papers published in international academic arena is worthy of concern. This present paper aims at identifying research difficulties of the HSS teachers in general universities and exploring ways to elevate their research capacity. A 5-Likert scale questionnaire survey with statistical analyses was adopted. Forty-seven teachers from eight HSS fields i...

Complemented by a literature review, a questionnaire survey with statistical analyses is adopted. The subjects are 47 teachers from nine HSS faculties in two general universities. A cross-sectional investigation into whether and how demographical variables influence subjects' perceptions of these enquired issues is also undertaken. The main findings are: (1) Extrinsic factors cause more impediments than intrinsic ones to academic productivity of the HSS teachers. Dissatisfactory library resources and insufficient manpower manifest themselves the heaviest hindrances, followed by the need of research funds and grants. (2) Teaching load poses a bigger threat to elevation of research capability than administrational commitments. (3) Doctoral degree holders would get too serious about achievements of their research undertakings to yield t...

The contributing factors behind consumers' decision-making are further investigated. This paper also looks into the frequency of tea and coffee consumer teatime habits and consumer demographic structure. The relationship between tea and coffee consumers in relation to their reasons of consuming decision-making is studied. The issues as to whether demographic variables influence the decision-making and consuming reasons are also examined. A questionnaire survey was adopted in our research, which utilizes statistical analyses. The sample was comprised of 316 people living in Kaohsiung. The main findings are: 1) Tea was preferred by most individuals. 2) Approximately 72% of the sampled subjects in Kaohsiung area have a teatime habit every week (21.5% more than 3 times a week, along with another 50.9% fewer than 3 times per week). 3) Males were ...

Although MR is highly sensitive, it provides abundant organization information. Therefore, how to transform the multi-spectral images which is easier to be used for doctor’s clinical diagnosis. In this thesis, the fuzzy bidirectional edge detection method is used to solve conventional SRG problem of growing order in the initial seed stages. In order to overcome the problems of the different regions, although it is the same Euclidean distance for region growing and merging process stages, we present the peak detection method to improve them. The standard deviation target generation process (SDTGP) is applied to guarantee the regions merging process does not cause over- or undersegmentation. Experimental results reveal that FISRG segments a multispectral MR image much more effectively than FAST andK-means.

The purpose of this study aims at examining students' perceptions of English placement practice and instruction at a university of science and technology. Complemented by a literature review, a quantitative questionnaire survey was adopted in this study, with the participation of 452 students from 10 departments. The result of the study has indicated: (1) The ability-grouping practice engenders some instructional and learning advantages. The apparent benefits are that English placement practice was helpful for students' English learning, understanding the teaching content, and accepting their teachers' teaching methods. Of noticeable gains of the English grouping practice was lowering students' stress level in learning English. (2) The positive effects of the practice on students' learning in terms of elevating motivation and interest, becoming active and positive learners and in...

The subject was 82 juniors and seniors at a national hospitality college in Southern Taiwan. Questionnaires, achievement tests and classroom observation were research instruments in the inquiry. The statistical evidences of the study have demonstrated the effectiveness of the ESP listening and speaking course. This ESP class, characterized by a synthesis of language-oriented, skills-oriented and learning-oriented approaches to ESP syllabus design is harvested with fruitful achievements: incremental gain in their ESP content knowledge and skills (the outcome of the language-oriented syllabus), strengthening the ability of searching for and organizing information for conducting English presentations (the outcome of the skills-oriented syllabus) and, above all, the achievement in cooperative team spirit build up (the outcome of the learning-oriented syllabus). The study also provides valuable reference for subsequent design and implementation of related ESP courses in the future.

This ESP class is content-based, featuring a combination of language-oriented, skills-oriented and learning-oriented approaches to ESP syllabus design. The syllabus aims at reaching satisfactory outcomes corresponding with preordained objectives. A variety of teaching and learning activities are applied within the framework of the Whole English Approach, such as lectures in an English-medium fashion, grammar understanding and practice, audio-lingual teaching activities as well as cooperative group and pair works. Cooperative team works function to enhance learning effects and motivation. Students' performance on two oral presentations illustrate itself as learner-centered output productions in the teaching and learning process, which adds to their learning outcomes in ter...

The question of how cognitive flexibility was related to each of these variables of resistance to organizational change was then examined. The sample comprised 419 employees from large-scale manufacturers in Taiwan, who had previously experienced organizational change. Our findings indicated that insight and self-reflection were antecedent variables of cognitive flexibility. Of the 3 variables, resistance to organizational change, affective resistance, and cognitive resistance were positively related to behavioral resistance, and affective resistance was positively related to cognitive resistance. Conversely, cognitive flexibility was negatively related to all the variables of r...

" The multiple definitions associated with the term are inductively presented in conceptualizations so as to clarify what are the curricular issues that teachers should be concerned about in the school context. This paper then argues for the need to consider a broader spectrum of " curriculum " that embraces the whole aspects in the curriculum development process, for example, objectives, content, methodology, and evaluation of students, especially when a curricular review or evaluation is undertaken.
