The research conducted was an exploratory, descriptive case study, involving about 70% of this company's suppliers. This supply chain comprised the food service (focal) company, 69 material suppliers and 5 logistic service providers. A proposal for a business cell approach for the 4PL freight management for the food service company studied was developed and implemented. The application of the proposed approach provided a significant reduction in freight costs in the supply chain. This approach is a way of involving various agents in an inbound supply chain and, therefore, goes beyond the client and third-party logistics relationship. The approach developed also displays potential for being adjusted and applied to other industrial sectors, such as meat, beverage and packaging.

These concepts encompass a set of managerial, organisational and technological issues focusing on the establishment of partnerships and co-operation among companies with the purpose of achieving competitive advantages and exploiting market opportunities. SCM is based on the idea that companies should run strategically and be holistically integrated with their key suppliers and customers. A VE can be defined as a dynamic and temporary form of co-operation among companies, in which different partners join complementary competencies to exploit a specific business opportunity. Although both models have their peculiarities, they also have some similarities. This article discusses and compares the supply chain (SC) concept, from the standpoint of SCM, with that of the VE, and considers the situation in which a co-operative enterprise, idealised to work as a VE, acquires characteristics of a SC structure. This process of change is analysed and the real case of a VE that became a supply chain is reported.

One example of such an extension is the contemporary concept of supply chain flexibility (SCF). Although there has been considerable academic progress on SCF, most of the previous studies on this topic have been confined to a single firm, thereby neglecting other important aspects of a supply chain. Therefore, the development of empirical multi-tier studies capable of investigating the inter-organisational components of SCF is required. Within this context, this paper has the purpose of exploring the main effects of flexible SC capabilities or their lack at various tiers that limit the SC׳s ability to provide products to end-customers. The research design was a multiple case study with internal and external validity checks, within-case analysis and cross-case comparisons, based on a research framework that scrutinises the relationships between SC contextual constraints and flexibility types. The study took place in three representative SCs of the Brazilian automotive industry and sought mainly to identify and compare SC contextual constraints that hinder product delivery to end-customers. Constraints such as suppliers´ capacity, diversity of suppliers, suppliers´ cooperation, trust and commitment, tariffs, exchange rates and inventory were identified in different supplier tiers of the OEMs as the main factors influencing the observed volume and mix flexibilities. Additionally, SCF types such as sourcing, relational, delivery, postponement, new product and responsiveness influenced the SC׳s flexibility provided to the end-customers.
