A proper understanding of this relationship may help to improve quality of life in general, and reduce poverty in particular for underdeveloped region. The present paper is an effort to study the agrarian economy of north-east India, which is an underdeveloped region in the country. A comparative state-wise analysis of some economic parameters and population pressure on the agricultural sector along with district-wise agricultural productivity in the region has been carried out. The spatial distribution of land productivity as well as labour productivity has been mapped across the districts of the region using a GIS tool. The study reveals a general trend of the region, but there exist significant variations among sates and districts. Although these analyses are based on the secondary data of some macro-economic indicators and population/agriculture census, yet it makes an attempt to map the exte...

Econometric studies indicate a direct relationship between development of physical infrastructure and economic growth. Road infrastructure, in particular, provides a network to facilitate trade, transport, social integration and economic development, especially for an underdeveloped region. The present article is an effort to study the road infrastructure of India’s north-east (NE) region, which is one of the underdeveloped regions of the country. The growth of infrastructure in NE, both social and physical, has not kept pace with the rest of the country, leading to widening of disparities. The overall economic situation of NE has been presented in the article. Comparative state-wise analyses of road length, type, category and quality of available roads have been carried out. The dispersion of road density in terms of per thousand population and also per thousand square kilometre of...

But the pace and level of development are generally not uniform across the regions, and subsequently create regional disparities. The induced (man-made) disparities need to be quantified to analyse the cause and consequence of unequal development and the future course of action. This article is an attempt to present the socio-economic disparities among various states/regions/sectors in India. Region-wise, southern states are ahead in many indices followed by north-western states, while eastern and central parts of India are lagging behind the overall development. The north-east India still remains in isolation with some exemption of higher ranked (developed) districts of Sikkim and Tripura. Disparities also exist within the districts of a state and have been presented as intra-state disparities on some selected parameters. Districts have been ranked on...

This is particularly important for the Himalaya, which is the youngest and most fragile mountain ecosystem in the world. In the complex mountain environment of the Indian Himalayan region (IHR), which continues to remain backward in terms of economic and infrastructure development, availability of accurate and authentic data in a suitable format is pivotal for effective development planning and decision making. The present volume on Resource Information Database is the third in the series of theme based/occasional publication of the ENVIS Centre on Himalayan ecology of the Institute (GBPIHED).

India is an agrarian country and agriculture is the major livelihood option of millions; hence the study of agriculture vulnerability is very much needed for food security of the country. Several studies have been carried out on different aspects of vulnerability like land degradation, wasteland, hydrological vulnerability, environmental aspects, etc. for specific state or region. The present paper is an attempt to integrate the hydro-ecological vulnerability of Indian districts in the context of agriculture and state level environmental performance across the country. The spatial distribution of vulnerable districts across the states along with state of environment has been mapped using a geographic information system (GIS) tool. There exists a significant vulnerability, particularly among the districts of western part of India. The environmental sustainabil...
