Among the different types of fuel cells, PEM fuel cells are gaining more importance due to its fast start up time and low operating temperature. This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a fuel cell based system which can be used for residential applications. The polarization curve and the power curve of a stack of 65 fuel cells is plotted by using MATLAB. Simulation is done in the MATLAB-SIMULINK environment and the results are also discussed.

Z-source inverter provides a single stage power conversion topology which can give both voltage buck and boost properties. This paper also gives an insight on the working of Z-source inverter by utilization of shoot through forbidden states. These states are utilized by implementing various control schemes namely Simple boost control (SBC), Maximum boost control (MBC) and Constant boost control (CBC). The design of impedance network, simulation of Z-source inverter using the different control schemes and their summary is put forward in this paper.

For most of the PV applications, the conventional VSI has been used which requires an additional boost converter to boost output voltage. A single stage power conversion topology which can give both voltage buck and boost properties is provided by Z-source inverter. The control method used in Z-source inverter is Simple Boost Control (SBC) technique with Sinusoidal pulse width modulation. The design of the impedance network, simulation results of traditional two stage VSI and single stage Z-source inverter, and harmonic analysis of both inverters are also presented in this paper.

The design of the entire system consists of DC supply, Boost Converter, inverter, and controllers are dealt in detail. The hardware implementation consists of a three phase inverter, 50W BLDC motor and DSP TMS32028069 for controlling the commutation sequence and thereby the operation of the motor. Experimental results are also presented.
