Youth not in employment, not in education, and not in training are most vulnerable to life setbacks, find it difficult dealing with criticism, rejection, and failure. Thus, youth workers responsible for the coordination of youth service programme need to design an autonomy-supportive programme that can prepare youth mentally before youth are placed in a youth development programme that seeks to enhance youth employability. The National Youth Development Agency in South Africa under the National Youth Service Programme has developed a mental toughness programme curriculum that NYS volunteers undergo before participating in youth skill development programme or community service programme for a minimum of five days. The aim of the study is to explore the impact of the Mental Toughness Programme on the positive development of youth through youth lived experience in the Western Cape Pro...

A qualitative research approach was used, involving purposive sampling. Data collection was by individual and focus group semi-structured interviews, and the data gathered were analysed using the thematic method. Youth apathy in a democracy is a matter of serious concern because the health of an electoral democracy depends on the participation of the people. In the South African national and provincial elections of 2019, young people potentially constituted the largest single constituency in the electoral process. The findings of the research indicated that factors such as a biased recruitment process run by the Independent Electoral Commission, a lack of trust in the commission, ageism and limited youth participation in the political process, illiteracy and economic exclusion all contributed to youth apathy in Collins Chabane Municipality, South Africa. The study recommends that the government launch a national project specifically to foster civic education.

The rapid increase of Covid-19 infections and fatalities has caused much concern around the world and has resulted in the implementation of various mitigation measures. Covid-19 has taken everyone by surprise, and disrupted the world’s economy tremendously. South Africa has one of the highest Covid-19 infection rates in Africa, and the South African government has embarked on a nationwide lockdown to minimise the spread of the virus. This decision was not welcomed by many people, especially unemployed youth, informal traders, post-graduate students at higher learning institutions, and matriculants. Covid-19 has been proven to have an especially severe effect on people above the age of 60, and people who have compromised immune systems or other underlying medical conditions (World Health Organization, 2020). Younger people in general do not face the same health risk from Covid-19 as the elderly, but their educational, spiritual, physical, and economic development will be impacted by the pandemic. These adverse impacts on young people’s development will be the focus of this paper.
