The chapter first discusses the theory of practice, which is encapsulated in our conceptualization of doing fandom. It then introduces a trio of essential sociological concepts reflected in the anthology’s three-part organization: The conceptualization of habitus illuminates the early developmental roots of performing and experiencing fandom. Second, the gendered‚ inherent stipulated elements of fandom as embodied in fans’ experiences and practices are discussed‚ and lastly‚ the notion of claiming the right to space helps account for the extension of doing fandom from the designated space of the stadium to fans’ political activism beyond its perimeter.

As part of the attempt to keep all men within the religious seminaries for as long as possible, the rabbis of these institutions stress the value of equality among students. At the same time, these religious educational frameworks stress excellence as part of their attempt to foster the community’s future religious leadership. This article focuses on the unique meanings and expressions of the tension between equality and excellence in the students’ scholastic achievements and the ways in which this community deals with such tensions. By examining the discourses and practices employed by the religious leadership, this article demonstrates how they confront the growing tension and navigate between equality and excellence in their attempt to preserve the current order. In the past decade, leading rabbis of Haredi yeshivas in Israel have been preoccupied by the growing tension between excellence and equality. We do so by eliciting conceptions of the daily tasks and responsibilities of mothers and fathets, as well as reasons for improper parental performance, from 95 middle-class Israeli adolescents. Their representation of these roles is complex, incorporat ing both a clinging to and a departure from traditional images of parental role behavior, and seems to reflect the confusion of the post-modem era as regards parenthood. Above all, subjects seem to view mothers and fathers neither as mythical gods nor demons, but rather as human b...

In addition to revealing women’s gendered-based experiences and the different ways in which women acquire and perform fandom, their personal stories prove valuable for exposing the gendered regime of the football field. Moreover, they reveal how women who are not fluent in the hegemonic language of fandom make their way in the fandom field as they seek their own voice and position in it. The analysis suggests that women’s participation can disrupt the hegemonic masculinity of fandom and challenge its established boundaries, thereby problematizing accepted definitions of the authentic fan.

Football is not just a game that children and adults love to play and watch; it also involves individual, group, and collective identities, and local and national identification. Football reflects, and often accentuates, political and social conflicts that highlight ethno-national, class, political, and gender hierarchies and tensions in society. The game is largely dependent on the surrounding context(s) that determines its “relative autonomy,” which shapes its distinguished fandom culture(s) and practices (Rapoport 2016).
