This study concerns growth of graphene, a two dimensional material that is only one atom thick. This material is lightweight, a excellent conductor of heat and electricity and also the strongest material ever tested. This material is believed to revolutionize the human future as semiconductors did in the last century. To use this material in different applications, like transparent contact material for touch screens, biomedical coatings, gas sensors, just to name a few, it is very important to modify its properties according to the requirements of relevant fields. An easy and quick way is to add other elements in this material as to change its properties. Despite extensive efforts the existing methods are time consuming and expensive, therefore this PhD project developed new protocols where molecules are used as starting material to grow graphene. Light and heat transform the molecules into strong sheets of graphene. We also successfully added other elements like boron and nitrogen ...
