PLANNING AND SCHEDULING Purpose To define the project and to prepare project plans and schedules that support the project definition. Overview This Phase describe the tasks and steps necessary to plan and schedule the activities that the Project Manager and the project team should perform to achieve a successful completion of a project. A Project Plan is prepared which is defined as a management summary document that describes the essentials of a project in terms of its objectives, justification and how the objectives are to be achieved. It describes how all of the major activities under each project management function are to be accomplished, including that of overall project control. The project plan will evolve through successive stages of the project life cycle. A Project Plan is developed once the Business Case and Project Charter have been defined. It is assumed that the Business Case and the Project Charter have been prepared prior to the execution of this Phase and are of an acceptable quality and standard. Project planning is defined as developing the basis for managing the project, including the planning objectives, deliverables, interim work products, procedures, organisation, chain of activities, resources types and numbers, timing, routines and finances.
