The contributions to the present volume by Jewish and Christian scholars from Israel and Germany -- from the departments of Biblical Studies and Jewish Philosophy at Tel Aviv University and the Protestant and Catholic Faculties of Theology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum -- show how Judaism and Christianity have dealt with this problem over the centuries. In this context, it becomes clear that in both religions human protest plays a special role.

The public performance of priestly marriages served to establish a new ideal. The recognition and reassessment of marriage goes hand in hand with a limited recognition of male sexuality. This does not only mean a marginal but a fundamental change, illustrating the worldliness of the new faith.
