Abies pinsapo, an endangered species native to the Mediterranean (Spain and Morocco), is found in Chile as ornamental, but in Valdivia, there is a 42-year-old experimental plantation that allows us to know its development as a species of forestry interest. The objectives of the work were to characterize the forest biometrics of the stand, analyze its growth in diameter, determine the basic density of the wood, and characterize the understory, mulch, and rooting. Standard and basal diameter variables were measured using a census, and heights were estimated. Diametric growth was evaluated according to ring width (radial samples of 5 mm diameter) and basic wood density in radial samples of 12 mm diameter. In addition, understory, soil, mulch, and rooting were characterized. The local climate is wetter and colder than originally, but suitable for the species. The soil is structurally adequate but poor in nutrients. The stand had 1830 trees/ha, a basal area of 105.6 m2/ha, a mean square diameter of 27 cm, a dominant height of 22 m, and an average basic wood density of 350 kg/m3. The understory covered 9%, and the mulch presented 40.5 Mg/ha of organic matter. The fine rooting reached a depth of 1 m, with high surface oncentration (50% in 0 cm - 21 cm). It was concluded that Abies pinsapo has developed better in Valdivia than in its natural habitat; its diametric growth indicated more significant stress due to competition than to climatic limitations, and its wood had low basic density.

In Chile, studies on its dynamics and productivity in forests, where it is the dominant species, have been carried out mainly in the foothills of the Andes, but the productivity and growth of these forests in the Coastal Range are almost unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the construction of a single dominant height/age growth model for two homogeneous edaphoclimatic zones (ZEH 2 and 5) previously defined for this species in the Coastal Range of southcentral Chile. The results showed that the Chapman-Richards model was the best candidate function, in terms of goodness of fit and predictive capabilities. Using this function, specific parameters (a, b and c) were obtained for each zone, from which site models were constructed by the Algebraic Difference Approach method for a base age of 35 years. This model is intended to contribute to better estimations of site p...

In Chile, the most important commercial tree species are Pinus radiata, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens, which are successfully planted in other parts of the world. Available individual-tree allometric models are typically local models which do not include age or stand scale covariates and rely solely on stem diameter outside bark at breast height (DBH) and, in some cases, total tree height (H). We used data from 1571 trees across the distribution of the three species in Chile to develop general individual-tree equations for stem volume inside and outside bark, and biomass components (dead branch, live branch, foliage, bark and stem wood inside and outside bark). Our models include DBH or DBH and H as predicting variables, as well as stand-level variables like age, basal area and stand density. General allometric models that include stand-level variables have not been previously reported for P. radiata, E. globulus and E. nitens. Given the broad area of inference in our data, the models are applicable over a large geographical area and a variety of stand ages and characteristics and can be used to support management decisions or integrated in stand-level productivity models to enhance the accuracy and precision of model outputs. The collective effort behind this study is a remarkable example of cooperation across researchers and practitioners in order to address complex questions in a transdisciplinary world.
