A signature feature of Miloš Crnjanski's famous novel Seobe (Migrations), written in the Serbian ... more A signature feature of Miloš Crnjanski's famous novel Seobe (Migrations), written in the Serbian language, is the author's seemingly eccentric use of punctuation marks. Odd as it may seem, the paper maintains that such punctuation serves a literary purpose, as it regulates the flow of narration and imposes a strict overall rhythm. Preserving the original punctuation becomes a major issue in translation, especially into English, owing to the discrepancy in morphosyntactic systems of the two languages. Michael Henry Heim's translation of Seobe into English, entitled Migrations, does not follow the original punctuation pattern, thereby ignoring a series of wider implications of the syntactic, prosodic, and semantic kind. While calling for Seobe's retranslation that would pay closer attention to Crnjanski's punctuation, this paper argues that the key to the preservation of the novel's distinct rhythm lies in keeping the however peculiar sentence structures and accompanying punctuation-as long as the rules of standardized grammars are respected.

Albahari's short story "Learning Cyrillic", translated from Serbian into English by Elias-Bursać,... more Albahari's short story "Learning Cyrillic", translated from Serbian into English by Elias-Bursać, combines three languages-Serbian, English, and Blackfootand two scripts-Latin and Cyrillic. This article uses the story and its English translation to examine the destabilisation patterns in the concepts of intra-and interlingual translation that occur in a multilingual text. The paper argues that translational relations are not given but rather contextually determined in each case. Elias-Bursać's multilingually and graphically aware translation disrupts the traditionally predictable behaviour of 'source' and 'target' by obscuring the presumed one-to-one correspondence between them. In arguing for a scalable minimal unit of translation, the paper adapts Jin's (2017) metonymic approach to 'close' and 'distant reading' to fit the translational agenda. The asymmetry between the 'source' and 'target', along with a scalable minimal unit of translation, reinforces the pertinence of a contextual framework in the study of multilingual literature's translational relations.

This paper poses a parallel analysis of Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway and Jean Rhys's Voyage in the Dark, two novels set in London around the First World War that complement one another with regard to representation of women in the city. In focus are Woolf's and Rhys's heroines who belong different social classes. With a view to producing a fuller picture of the London strata of the time, the paper concentrates on a dual front: it examines the position the protagonists enjoy in respect to their gender as well as in respect to their social status. While Rhys's Anna is a young woman from a distant colony, that is an outsider with no permanent residence in London, Woolf's Clarissa Dalloway, however seemingly privileged, is greatly disadvantaged by her restricted experience of the metropolis. The paper argues that in these two novels London is a source of double marginalisationa city unjust to the colonial subjects but unjust to women of all strata. As a theoretical background, the paper uses the concept of gendered geographies of power, which are supposed to help us reveal how different power structures affect the cityscape on both macro and micro level.

Овај есеј бави се методолошким тензијама у изучавању књижевног превођења, посебно раздором између два модела: херменеутичког (заснованог на интерпретацији) и инструменталног (заснованог на еквиваленцији). Полазећи од претпоставке да у коментарима превода доминира инструментализам, есеј заговара тезу да би окретање ка херменеутичким моделима у изучавању преводилачке теорије и праксе могло имати широку примену у изучавању књижевности. Истраживање је показало да инструментални модел преовлађује у коментарима, али и да је често испреплетан са херменеутичким на начине који нису конзистентни. Расправа је употпуњена компаративном анализом превода Шекспирових сонета на српски језик, где су теоријска становишта објашњена на конкретним примерима.
Кључне речи: књижевно превођење, херменеутички модел, инструментални модел, интерпретација, еквиваленција, Лоренс Венути, Вилијам Шекспир, Шекспирови Сонети, превод са енглеског на српски, поновно превођење.
METHODOLOGICAL TENSIONS IN THE STUDY OF LITERARY TRANSLATION: A TURN TOWARDS THE HERMENAUTIC MODEL
This essay attends to methodological tensions in the study of literary translation, particularly the discord between two models: hermeneutic (based on interpretation) and instrumentalist (based on equivalence). Starting from the assumption that translation commentary is dominated by instrumentalism, this essay argues that turning towards hermeneutic models in the study of translation theory and practice could be widely applicable to the study of literature. This research has demonstrated that instrumentalism does dominate the commentaries but it has also shown the instrumentalist model is often intertwined with the hermeneutic one in ways which are not consistent. The discussion is complemented with a comparative analysis of retranslations of Shakespeare’s sonnets into the Serbian language, where theoretical standpoints are explained on concrete examples.
