А. Анненков, князь A. Н. Вяземский, H. H. Депрерадович, Д. А. On December 14, 1825, during the military revolt on the Senate Square in St. Petersburg, a number of former and present members of the secret societies of the Decembrists were on the side of Emperor Nicholas I. Colonel Vasily Perovsky, a former member of the Union of Prosperity, Adjutant of Nicholas I, Colonel Vasily Perovsky, met Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, who arrived from Warsaw with a letter from Tsarevich Konstantin, at the city outpost, and then called troops loyal to the Emperor to the square. Another adjutant, a member of the same Union Colonel Alexander Kavelin, brought the young Tsarevich Alexander Nikolayevich (future Alexander II) to the Winter Palace and visited the mortally wounded Governor-General of St. Petersburg Count Mikhail Miloradovich on behalf of the Emperor. A member of the Union of Salvation and the Union of Prosperity, General Sergei Shipov, commanded the Guards Brigade and tried to prevent the Guards crew from joining the rebels. In a similar attempt, a member of the Union of Prosperity, Colonel Pavel Khvoshchinsky, was wounded in the Moscow Guards Regiment. Colonel of the Finnish Guards Regiment Alexander von Moller that day commanded the guards in the Winter Palace, the Admiralty and the Senate. Officers-cavalry guards members of the St. Petersburg branch of the Southern Society I. Annenkov, Prince A. Vyazemsky, H. Depreradovich, D. Artsybashev and a member of the Northern Society A. Muravyov, as well as a member of both secret societies cornet of the Guards Horse Regiment Prince A. Suvorov participated in cavalry attacks on the rebels. Why and how did these people end up in the ranks of opponents of their comrades in secret societies? Did the rebels consider the position and actions of these people a betrayal? How did Nicholas I assess the revealed facts of participation in secret societies of officers who took his side in the confrontation on December 14? Did these officers deserve his forgiveness?

The article discusses the name history of the mineral perovskite (calcium titanate, CaTiO3), found in the mining Urals in the 1830s. Today the term ‘perovskite’ is used for naming a wide class of materials with crystalline structure like that of this mineral. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, scientists discovered several unique properties of these materials, which are of interest from both basic and applied perspectives: superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, ferroelectricity, etc. In 1987 and 2007 perovskite research has been awarded two Nobel Prizes in physics. One of the most important scientific achievements of recent years has been the unprecedented increase in the efficiency of perovskite solar cells, which made it possible to talk about the coming perovskite revolution in the energy sector. However, in the first half of the 19th century it was impossible to predict the promising future of perovskites, so the discovery of a new mineral did not arouse noticeable interest outside a narrow circle of experts. Until now, the early history of perovskite remains poorly understood and is replete with white spots. Thus, the place where the first sample was found is reliably known, but the exact date of discovery and the discoverer are not known as yet. The mineral perovskite was named after a high-ranking amateur mineralogist Lev Perovsky, the choice of the name is attributed to the Berlin mineralogist Gustav Rose. In fact, the authoritative specialist G. Rose participated in the examination of the discovered mineral, but the name of the stone was given by another, less-known person – the St. Petersburg pharmacist Alexander Kammerer.

In 1835, the auditor L. F. Yaroshevitsky discovered a large number of unaccounted precious and semi-precious stones in the apartment of the commander of the Ekaterinburg lapidary factory Ya. V. Kokovin. Among them was a large emerald, which, according to the auditor, “almost surpassed the dignity of the emerald that was in the crown of Julius Caesar”. The stones were packed in boxes, sealed and sent to St. Petersburg. When opening the boxes in the capital, it turned out that the specified emerald had disappeared without a trace. The search for the precious stone remained without result. In the “Essays on the History of Stone” published in 1961 by academic A. E. Fersman, the vice-president of the Appanage Department and the owner of a large collection of minerals, L. A. Perovsky, was named the thief of the emerald. For the sake of substantiating this version, the text of L. F. Yaroshevitsky’s report was distorted. Under the name of the “Emerald of Kokovin”, another Ural mineral got into the collection of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. There is also no certainty that the author of the version was A. E. Fersman himself, because the academic died in 1945, leaving the second volume of “Essays” unfinished. The authority of academic A. E. Fersman and the popularity of his “Essays” (last reprinted in 2003) still contribute to the replication of the unfounded version of the guilt of L. A. Perovsky in the theft of the “Emerald of Kokovin”. The purpose of this article is to justify the name “zealous lover of mineralogy”, as the famous German mineralogist prof. Gustav Rose called Lev Perovsky.

Stepan D. Nechaev is a poet and prose writer of the first quarter of the 19th century, who is known not so much for his literary works as for his literary connections. He was friends with A. Bestuzhev (Marlinsky), was familiar with K. Ryleev, V. Kyuchelbeker, N. Polevoy, published in the journals “Polar Star’, “Herald of Europe”, “Moscow Telegraph”. His prose inspired A. S. Pushkin to write the poem “Avalanche”, A. Chavchavadze translated his poem “I love the word” into Georgian, A. Alyabyev set the poem “One more day” to music. Nechaev undertook a long trip around the Caucasus for ethnographic study and literary description of an unfamiliar region in 1823. The result of this trip was two literary travelogues – a large poem “Memories” and prose “Excerpts from travel notes about South-Eastern Russia”. Most of the time the author-traveler spent on the Caucasian Mineral Waters – in Goryachevodsk (future Pyatigorsk) and Kislovodsk. However, the entire Caucasian route turned out to be much longer: through Starocherkassk, Stavropol and Georgievsk to the Caucasian waters and back – through Georgievsk, Mozdok and Kizlyar to Astrakhan and further up the Volga. During this voyage, Nechaev had a number of important meetings. The official and writer V. Timkovsky, who was under General A. Yermolov, may have revealed to Nechaev the secret plans of the environment of the “proconsul of the Caucasus”. The Kabardian educator Sh. Nogmov introduced him to the culture and way of life of his people. A disgraced officer and future participant in the uprising on Senate Square A. Yakubovich became a friend of Nechaev and the hero of one of his poems. Nechaev’s Caucasian travelogues were published in 1825–1826, being one of the last lifetime publications of this author. After the defeat of the Decembrist uprising, which included many of Nechaev’s friends and acquaintances, he also came under suspicion. No great fault was found for Nechaev, but he preferred to give up his dream of literary glory.

The article is devoted to the history of the creation of the “Note on sects existing in the Perm province” (1827), which became the best description of the Ural old believers of its time. The material for the note was collected by a Moscow official and writer S. D. Nechaev. His trip to the Urals fell on the troubled times after the defeat of the Decembrists’ mutiny when Emperor of Russia Nicholas I was inclined to suspect secret societies’ activities everywhere. Stepan Dmitrievich Nechayev (1792–1860) was also a member of the Union of Prosperity. Usually, investigators were not interested in persons who had left the Decembrist societies before 1821. But Nechayev signed a false statement according to which he had never been a member of such societies. For such acts of perjury, other members of the Union of Prosperity were sentenced to a month's imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress. Nechayev also had artistic and friendly relations with the Decembrists-writers A. A. Bestuzhev, K. F. Ryleev, V. K. Kyukhel'beker, who played key or prominent roles in the preparation and realization of the armed revolt on 14 December 1825 in St. Petersburg. However the three months spent in the Ural saved him from prosecution.

The article analyzes the content and interrelation of the concepts “tsar” (and synonymous with it — “monarch”, “sovereign emperor”, etc.) and “law” (“decree”, etc.) in the texts of petitions submitted on behalf of employees of state and private mining plants of the Urals, as well as from members of their families in the first half of the 19th century. The source base of the study comprises more than 170 unpublished petitions identified by the author in the RGIA, RGADA and the State Archive of the Sverdlovsk region. The authenticity of these petitions does not exempt the researcher from the need for a critical analysis of their content. The petitions were written in the conditions of confrontations and disputes, so the characteristics and value judgments in them suffer from exaggerations. The tsar is represented in the image of a sacred force and the main legislator. The laws serve as an instrument of expressing the highest and just will of the tsar. However, the authors of the petitions realized that the state is not only the sovereign. In addition to the “decrees of His Imperial Majesty”, other legal acts are mentioned in the petitions, the connection of which with the supreme will was not so obvious. Factory and regional administrations were represented as a force opposing the tsar, the laws and the petitioners themselves. These administrations allegedly misinterpreted tsarist decrees, manipulated legal acts and even created their own unrighteous “laws”. And if the justice of the tsarist power remained unquestionable, its effectiveness caused certain doubts.

This article considers the history of the unrealized project of the establishment of «free mining towns» in Russia (in the Urals) in the first half of the XIX century. Only free people had to live and work in such towns. The outstanding mining figure A. S. Yartsov filed a note addressed to Emperor Alexander I in 1802, in which he proposed a number of measures to improve the domestic mining industry. The creation of mountain towns modeled after European Bergstädte was one of these measures. A special committee on the reform of the mining part was established under the influence of Yartsov's note. In 1804, the French architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux the architect published the treatise under the title «L'Architecture considérée sous le rapport de l'art, des mœurs et de la legislation» («Architecture considered in relation to art, morals, and legislation») in Paris. The project of the ideal mining town of Chaux was presented in this edition. Ledoux dreamed of creating with the help of architectural forms an ideal environment for the moral development of people. Could the French architect have known that at this very time in St. Petersburg work was underway on the legal justification of the establishment of «free cities» in serfdom Russia? This assumption does not look improbable. A special committee prepared a draft of new mining legislation, which was approved by Alexander 1 on July 13, 1806. Yekaterinburg received the status of a mountain city on May 1, 1807. However, then the emperor lost interest in liberal projects. Yekaterinburg has remained the only mining town in Russia. The content of the concept of «free mining town» has also changed: the dream of free labor has been replaced by the idea of independence of such a town from the governor's power.

А. In the 1830s, a new mineral had been discovered in the mining region of the Urals, which was named perovskite in honor of the famous collector, Vicepresident of the Department of Appanages L. A. Perovsky. At that time, no one, of course, could have foreseen that at the beginning of the 21st century, in the world solar energetics, there will be many talks about the coming ‘perovskite revolution’: in a few years, the efficiency of perovskite solar cells has risen from 3 % to 25, and the prospects for this growth are very encouraging. The article tells about the time of the discovery of perovskite, about who and under what circumstances gave the mineral this name.

I. The review is devoted to scientific and historical-journalistic works of the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods, which formulate the original versions of the events of the Interregnum of 1825 and the revolt of the Decembrists. The elimination of the ideological framework of Soviet Decembrists’ studies emancipated scientific research and made it possible to put forward previously impossible concepts and hypotheses. On the other hand, this same circumstance contributed to the appearance of Conspiracy theories and other quasi-scientific or not at all scientific versions that are not based on the necessary documentary base and objective scientific basis, but are clothed in an attractive form for a wide range of readers. As a result, modern literature has developed a contradictory variety of conceptual models of different levels and quality, claiming to explain the events of 1825. This review offers an experience of understanding the existing range of concepts, versions and hypotheses in post-soviet historiography. It focuses on the main discussion topics: about the circle of contenders for the throne (whether it was limited to grand dukes or included the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna); about the position and role of the capital's Governor-General Miloradovich and the existence of a general opposition or a conspiracy of generals who supported the transfer of the throne to Grand Duke Constantine; about the role of the secret society of the Decembrists and the officer conspiracy initiated by him in the Guards Corps; about other influential political forces (the Russian–American Company, the «German party», etc.) the accession of Grand Duke Nicholas.

Stepan Dmitrievich Nechayev (1792–1860) did not put forward revolutionary ideas, nor was he a mem-ber of later Decembrist societies. He was not under investigation. However, his life was split in two. Before 1826, Nechayev was known as the author of numerous poems, aphorisms, travelogues, and translations. His Love of the Public Goodencouraged him to serve the people’s enlightenment selflessly, erect a monument to the heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo, and participate in literary, academic, and charitable societies. For such acts of perjury, other members of the Union of Prosperity were sentenced to a month’s imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress. Nechayev also had artistic and friendly relationships with De-cembrist writers A. A. Bestuzhev, K. F. Ryleev, and V. K. Küchelbecker, who played key or prominent roles in the preparation and realisation of the armed revolt on 14 December 1825 in St Petersburg. What saved Nechayev was his three- month official trip to Perm province, during which he successfully collected information about Old Believers and sectarians. Thus began the second half of his life, in which Nechayev held high positions, such as chief procurator of the Synod and senator, made no dangerous acquaintances, and abandoned the dream of literary fame.

The article introduces the biography and characterizes works of Feoktist Andreevich Ulegov (1803–1830), the former serf of Ural manufacturers Demidovs. His book “The Guest Court of Russian Literature” (1830), which contained a pamphlet allegorical (in the form of a dream) depiction of contemporary Russian journalism, literature, historical science and philosophy, aroused a noisy scandal and discussion in the press at the time.

Ivan S. Maltsov (1807-1880) served as the first Secretary in diplomatic mission of Alexander S. Griboyedov. The entire mission was lost in Tehran in 1829. As a sole survived diplomat, Maltsov became the main informant of Russian official circles and educated society about the tragedy. Meanwhile, he himself was under suspicion. However, the complaints to Maltsov were vague. Rather, it was an emotional reaction to the death of famous writer Griboyedov. The paper discusses the role of Maltsov in Tehran events as well as the circumstances of his rescue and the question of his guilt.

The article is based on the field materials collected in the 2010s and considers the traditional beliefs of rural inhabitants of the Southern Urals about domovoy — his appearance, functions, qualities and abilities, as well as the practices of establishing relationships with him. The research has been conducted in the Russian village of Bedjarysh located in the southwestern part of the Chelyabinsk Region. The local folklore tradition presents notions of domovoy, which generally correspond to the all-Russian mythological system. His image is syncretic and causes contradictory feelings among the bearers of the tradition. Domovoy is a patron spirit that protects the peasant manor and all its inhabitants (people and animals) from misfortunes. However, encounters with him are undesirable and dangerous. For adult persons (unlike children) it is dangerous to hear and see domovoy, but a tactile contact with him is possible. Domovoy belongs to the other world, where time flows according to different laws. He knows both the past and what will happen in the future. But domovoy likes joking, that is why not all the signs given by him should be perceived as a premonition. Domovoy is an ancestor protector and perhaps even a progenitor, so he must be present in every house. His absence is fraught with troubles. Moving to a new place of residence, one should invite domovoy to join him. However, new house owners can also get him together with the house. Domovoy is a werewolf. He is able to appear as a human or an animal and can be visible and invisible. But anomalies in his appearance or behavior disclose him to people inevitably.

The paper suggests who and what measures contributed to the return of famous composer Alexander Alyabiev (1787–1851) from exile. We know about the role of Orenburg military governor Vasily Perovsky, who completed the process of liberation of Alyabyev: Perovsky received permission for the composer to live in the estate of his relatives and serve in Moscow. However, according to the author, this process began not in Orenburg, but in Caucasian Mineral Waters, where exiled Alyabyev met his old friend Nikolai Orzhitsky and his cousin – an influential grandee Lev Perovsky.

The secret political organization “Ukrainian-Slavic Society of Saints Cyril and Methodius” (“Cyri... more The secret political organization “Ukrainian-Slavic Society of Saints Cyril and Methodius” (“Cyril and Methodius Fraternity”) was revealed and destroyed in the spring of 1847. The Fraternity proclaimed that its goal to create Slavic democratic republics and unite them into an alliance with the center in Kiev. The ways and methods of achieving this goal remained unclear. The society itself, according to the investigation, consisted of only three people, including N. I. Kostomarov, who later became a famous historian. The head of the Third Department of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery (secret police of the Russian Empire) count A. F. Orlov did not see a serious threat in such a small organization. The count named poet and artist T.G. Shevchenko and prose writer and folklorist P. A. Kulish as the most “important criminals” arrested in this case. At the same time, Orlov did not consider them as members of the society, but characterized them as “Ukrainofiles” (perhaps for the first time using this term). In their works Shevchenko and Kulish glorified Ukrainian antiquity, the times of Hetman's rule and freedom of Cossack, bringing readers to the idea of the possibility and desirability of the existence of an independent Ukrainian state. Kulish, like most of the defendants in this case, was deported in one of the Great Russian provinces. The punishing of Shevchenko was more severe: he was ranked as a private and sent in the Orenburg separate corps. Emperor Nicholas I also issued a special order forbidding the poet and artist to write and draw. Shevchenko estimated his ten-year Orenburg exile (1847–1857) as the most painful period of his life. It is common opinion that the exile received support from some officers who did not occupy significant posts (lieutenant A. I. Butakov and major I. A. Uskov). The paper shows that the patrons of Shevchenko were military governors of Orenburg region and commanders of the corps – generals V. A. Obruchev and V. A. Perovsky. The poet himself characterized them very negatively.

These events divided the life of the Russian nobility, or at least the lives of many of its representatives, into “before” and “after”. Nechayev was also a member of the Union of Prosperity. Usu-ally, investigators were not interested in persons who had left Decembrist societies before 1821. But Nechayev signed a false statement according to which he had never been a member of such societies.

Is it possible, that a man called the Decembrist, participated in the suppression
of the uprising December 14, 1825? Is it possible, that this man was the Governor-
General in the reign of Nicholas I? And is it possible that the Decembrists
sentenced to penal servitude and exile, did not consider such a person a traitor?
All these questions are related to the biography of Alexander Suvorov, a grandson
of the famous generalissimo.

No great fault was found for Nechaev, but he preferred to give up his dream of literary glory.
conditions of confrontations and disputes, so the characteristics and value judgments in them suffer from exaggerations.
In the 1830s, a new mineral had been discovered in the mining region of the Urals, which was named perovskite in honor of the famous collector, Vicepresident of the Department of Appanages L. A. Perovsky. At that time, no one, of course, could have foreseen that at the beginning of the 21st century, in the world solar energetics, there will be many talks about the coming ‘perovskite revolution’: in a few years, the efficiency of perovskite solar cells has risen
from 3 % to 25, and the prospects for this growth are very encouraging. The article tells about the time of the discovery of perovskite, about who and under what circumstances gave the mineral this name.
No great fault was found for Nechaev, but he preferred to give up his dream of literary glory.
conditions of confrontations and disputes, so the characteristics and value judgments in them suffer from exaggerations.
