This research is aimed at studying the nature of Christian Syrians’ historical memory about the ... more This research is aimed at studying the nature of Christian Syrians’ historical memory about the era of the martyrs on the Syrian territory for the period between the end of the IV century and the first half of the V. That was the time when Christianity was developing as the state religion in the Roman Empire. We tried to figure out how the historical memory of the martyrs reflects the peculiarities of the cultural identity of the Syrians and their attitude to representatives of other ethnic groups. Also we tried to create a systematic historical review of the main social and ideological functions that were inherent in Syrians’ historical memory about the era of the martyrs (for the period between the late IV century and the first half of the V).

This article discusses the first half of the V-th century existing in Syria heretical and sectarian movements. The heresies of late antiquity are an important indicator of religious and social contradictions in various regions of the empire. The author attempts to identify the specifics of heresies common in the Syrian provinces of the Roman state. There is analyze of the nature of the sources created mainly by fighters against heresies from the orthodox line. The research finds out the reason for appearance of heretical and sects movements in the region, the nature of their prevalence, as well as the essence of religious and social doctrines. A classification option for heresies in Syria is proposed. The nature of the struggle against them by the state religion is analyzed. An attempt is also being made to establish the characteristics of the heresy charges as a tool in the ideological and political struggle of the period under consideration.

This is the time when there was no Syrian’s own state, but the Syrians had significant opportunities for the development of their own culture. The article illustrates the essence of one of the key factors of the Syrian identity of that period – the common historical memory, as an example of the reception of biblical stories. The author analyzes the issues of the Syrians historical memory as a stateless people, analyzes the principles of the functioning of historical memory in the conditions of the Syrians living on the territory of two permanently warring Roman and Persian empires. The materials of historical memory related to biblical subjects analyze the issues of interethnic and interfaith interaction between the Syrians, Romans, Persians and Jews, which, in particular with the Jews, usually took the form of open hostility. Rather often, the tools of this intolerance became arguments taken also from biblical history. The author of the article makes an attempt to analyze the reasons for the popularity of certain stories of biblical history. The role of this historical memory in preserving the Syrian identity is investigated. Plots related to the attitude to biblical location in Syria are researched, the reception of New Testament places that mention Antioch of Syria is analyzed, apocryphal stories that arose on the basis of the New Testament tradition, in particular the Teaching of the Apostle Addai, are examined. The problem of the different attitude of the Syrians to the plots of the Old and New Testaments in their historical memory is analyzed, the reasons and features of this differentiation are clarified. An attempt is made to clarify the essence of the differences in the historical memory of the educated part of the population and the broad masses of people, to explain the reasons and nature of such differences.

После событий Третьего Вселенского Собора (431 г.) и осуждения работ Нестория, значительная часть его сторонников стала опираться на труды весьма уважаемого тогда на востоке Византии богослова – Феодора Мопсуэстийского, который считался учителем Нестория. Поскольку к моменту споров Феодора уже не было в живых, процесс осуждения был очень проблематичным.
