The paper has two main aims: first, to offer a general overview about Augustine’s concept of corporeal matter, based on a comprehensive
examination of all the occurrences of the Latin lemmas "materia" and "materies" in his works; second, to discuss more in detail the vexed question of Plotinus' influence on Augustine’s conception of matter, in order to highlight that the major meeting points between Augustine and Plotinus rest on a purely literal level, and to rather point out the significant conceptual differences between these two thinkers.

Sidonius C. Sollius Apollinaris Sidonius, Die Briefe. Eingeleitet, übersetzt und erläutert von Helga Köhler, Stuttgart: Hiersemann 2014, XXXVII + 355 pp., ISBN 978-3-7772-1414-6, € 224 (hb). Die Briefe des Apollinaris Sidonius sind seit eh und je eine erstrangige Quelle für das Gallien des fünften Jahrhunderts und haben bis in den Humanismus hinein die europäische Literatur entscheidend beeinflusst. Als prototypi-sche Mischgestalt aus Aristokrat und Seelenhirt, römischem Präfekt und Bischof von Clermont, Hofpoet und liturgischem Autor ist Sidonius wesent-lich für unser Verständnis des spätantiken Christentums. Helga Köhler (K.) stellt ihn nun erstmals in einer mustergültigen Übersetzung seiner ganzen Korrespondenz dem deutschsprachigen Publikum vor. Dank ihrem wegwei-senden Kommentarband zum ersten Buch der Korrespondenz (Heidelberg 1995) ist K. eine der Urheberinnen der heutigen Sidonius-Renaissance. Das Buch enthält, neben der Übersetzung, eine Einleitung, eine Auswahl-Bibliographie und ein Namen-und Sachregister. Die Einleitung ist eine gekonnte, äußerst zugängliche Zusammenfassung unserer Kenntnis auf dem heutigen Stand der Wissenschaft. Binnen dreißig Seiten wird der Leser infor-miert über den Autor, seine Briefkunst und sein Nachleben. Zudem legt K. Rechenschaft ab über die Entscheidungen, die sie bei der Übersetzung getroffen hat. Einige, für die Übersetzung wichtige Aspekte möchte ich hier hervorheben. Die Sammlung von 147 Briefen in neun Büchern würdigt K. zu Recht als mehr als ein historisches Dokument, nämlich als ein sorgfältig angeleg-tes Gesamtkunstwerk aus Prosa und poetischen Einlagen, das Politik und Privatleben, Weltliches und Geistiges verbindet zu einem Kaleidoskop wech-selnder Stimmungen. Form und Sprache der Briefe stehen dabei stets gleich-rangig neben ihrem Informationsgehalt. Dem Stil des Sidonius gerecht zu werden war Hauptaufgabe dieser Über-setzung. Die sehr langen Perioden, die alle denkbaren Stil-und Gedankenfi-guren häufen, überforderten schon nachweisbar manche Zeitgenossen. K. hat sich für die weitestmögliche Nachbildung des Originals entschlossen, da die deutsche Syntax ja die Möglichkeit zu Schachtelsätzen bietet. Das Ergebnis ist eine vornehme, zuweilen leicht altertümliche, aber immer kristallklare Über-setzung. Die erfindungsreiche Wortwahl und der präzise Aufbau steuern den langen Atem, den der Leser braucht. Die Übersetzung wäre besonders dazu geeignet, vorgetragen zu werden. Bemerkenswert sind die poetischen Einla-gen, die K. virtuos gemäß der ursprünglichen Metren übersetzt.

Obwohl die Vorstellung von einem irdischen Heiligen Land in den neutestamentlichen Schriften nicht belegt ist, wurde sie in der Geschichte des Christentums sehr wirkmächtig. Katharina Heyden zeigt in dieser Studie, dass nicht die explizite Rede von der terra sancta, sondern die Orientierung an Palästina in unterschiedlichen Bereichen – Eschatologie, Kirchenpolitik, Hagiographie und Ikonographie – zur Sakralisierung der südlichen Levante und deren Rezeption durch westliche Christen führte. Als Bedingung der Möglichkeit einer christlichen Rede vom Heiligen Land wird das „synoptische Vermögen“ identifiziert, das sich in den Diskursen der ersten christlichen Jahrhunderte entwickelt hat.

This book debunks the myth that the cross was never used as a visual symbol in pre-Constantinian Christianity, bringing together the relevant material evidence demonstrating Christian use of the cross prior to Constantine. The artifacts presented in this book interlock with literary witnesses from the same period to provide a consistent and robust portrait of the cross as a pre-Constantinian symbol of Christian devotion. The material record of the pre-Constantinian period illustrates that Constantine did not invent the cross as a symbol of Christian faith; for an impressive number of Christians before Constantine’s reign, the cross served as a visual symbol of commitment to a living deity in a dangerous world.

L’Antiquité tardive constitue une période de première importance en raison de l’ampleur des sources conservées et des événements survenus. Durant cette époque, qui s’étend du IIIe au VIIe siècle, l’Empire romain connaît des évolutions profondes et progressives qui ont non seulement modifié l’organisation du monde méditerranéen antique, mais aussi posé les fondements des périodes et des civilisations postérieures et limitrophes.
C’est durant l’Antiquité tardive que l’autorité de l’État monarchique et bureaucratique devient omniprésente par le biais de la loi, de l’impôt et de l’armée, que le poids des autorités locales se réduit au profit des capitales administratives et de leur système de cour, que le brassage des populations aboutit à leur recomposition et à une fusion des élites, que la conversion au christianisme, malgré les divisions confessionnelles, provoque une intégration et une uniformisation culturelle sans précédent des populations par l’adhésion à une même transcendance et l’élaboration d’une esthétique commune.

This article deals with the theory of the so-called ‘intelligible Triad’ (esse, vivere, intellegere) to show in what way this theory was developed in Neoplatonism (by Plotinus, Porphyry, Iamblichus and Proclus) and transformed in the Patristic Thought (in Marius Victorinus, Augustine, Dionysius Areopagita, Maximus the Confessor, John Scott Eriugena),
where this theory was used to describe three main attributes of God as well as mutual relations between three Persons of the Holy Trinity and the structure of the created world and human soul.

An overview of Augustine of Hippo's views about freedom. I argue that Augustine the bishop was one of the first theological compatibilists, who believed that responsibility is compatible with at least certain kinds of necessity and that human freedom requires determination by divine grace.

The first point in Celsus’ argument against the biblical truth is the origin of the Jewish people and Christian faith. Celsus presents Jews and Christians as descendants of the rebellion against ancient peoples, who held and practiced an ancient account, the True Doctrine. Secondly, the biblical writers are susceptible according to Celsus. Because they are descendants of the rebels, their doctrine must be wrong. This is because in Celsus’ view the doctrine (logos) and the way of living (nomos) are in a mutual relation – a change in the one affects also the other. Thirdly, Celsus points out that Judaism and Christianity are in conflict with the True Doctrine. This is not because of their particular teaching but of their claim for universality, which, according to Celsus, has no universal basis. As Jews and Christians take only their scriptures and holy men into account, their faith is not universal but particular. Finally, on account of previous arguments, Celsus insists that the unreliability of the Bible concerning the universal truth is now proven and there is no divine inspiration in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. Therefore they cannot be interpreted allegorically.

In the biblical theophanies of Isaiah 6 and Daniel 3, divine condescension and human ascent constitute reciprocal ecstatic moves towards a divine–human encounter. The christological interpretation, widespread in early Christian reception history, further discerns in Isaiah 6 and Daniel 3 an anticipation of the radical condescension of the Logos-made-human and, conversely, an anticipation of the deifying ascent of humanity in Christ. Finally, the early Christian reading of Isaiah 6 and Daniel 3 as ‘christophanies’ – that is, as manifestations of the Logos-to-be-incarnate – also allows us a glimpse into the performative aspect and experiential claims of early Christian exegesis, broadly construed to also incorporate hymnography, iconography and ritual.

La búsqueda del pobre en una sociedad repleta de pobres puede leer una gran obra de arte in melius. Y esto es oficio de las mentes brillantes. Brillante fue la interpretación que Agustín, santo obispo de Hipona, dio a este pasaje evangélico en uno de sus sermones al pueblo. Pero, antes de analizar qué dijo, conviene contextualizar el discurso. Séneca había dicho cierta vez: «Si quieres encontrar descanso, conviene que seas pobre, o seme-jante al pobre» (Si vis vacare animo, aut pauper sis oportet, aut pauperi similis: Epist. 17, 5), pues el pobre ha sido considerado como ideal de virtud por su frugalidad y paciencia. Y al pensar en los primeros predi-cadores, vienen a la mente los vehe-mentes discursos de Juan Crisósto-mo en los que impugnaba a los ricos de este mundo y les echaba en cara sus derroches e injusticias. Fácil-mente el lector actual olvida que el Crisóstomo predicó en la gran evangélico es claro: «Hijo,-le dice Abraham al rico-recuerda que recibiste tus bienes durante tu vida y Lázaro, al contrario, sus males; ahora, pues, él es aquí consolado y tú atormentado» (Lc 16, 25). Nunca una escena tan breve ha tenido un resultado tan inmediato y eficaz en los lectores. Sin embargo, como en las grandes obras artísticas de la humanidad, el significado espiri-tual va más allá de la materialidad del arte mismo y, aunque Lucas nos pinta una escena insuperable en vigor y dramatismo, siempre se D e entre los pasajes más usados por los predica-dores con el fin de tratar sobre el pobre y la pobreza, sin duda la parábola del Evangelio de san Lucas sobre el indigente Láza-ro y el rico epulón ocupa el primer puesto. El dramatismo vivo de la escena habla por sí mismo y el rela-to de Jesús deja impreso en el alma del lector un cuadro pintado con el arte de la sobriedad y con la fuerza de la expresividad. Mientras el rico disfrutaba del buen comer y beber, un pobre yacía a su puerta cubierto de úlceras purulentas, a las que los perros, compañía fiel de su soledad, les rendían el consuelo del bálsamo áspero de sus lenguas exánimes y hambrientas. Kiedy w 1968 r. ukazał się pierwszy tom "Śląskich Studiów Historyczno-Teologicznych", bp Herbert Bednorz pisał we wstępie: "Przestrzeń geograficzna między Krakowem i Wrocławiem nie jest już białą plamą, pustką intelektualną, naukową, kulturalną. Prawdę powiedziawszy, nigdy tak w pełni nie było. Niemniej przyznajemy, że zupełnie wypełniło tę białą plamę dopiero stale rosnące i mocno rozbudowujące się w ostatnich latach centrum naukowe i kulturalne Katowic". Nawiązywał oczywiście do powstania w Katowicach Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, na którym, ze względu na kontekst polityczny, nie było mowy o powołaniu Wydziału Teologicznego. Nie oznaczało to jednak, że praca naukowa w dziedzinie teologii nie miała miejsca, czego wyrazem było ukazanie się pierwszego tomu "Śląskich Studiów Historyczno-Teologicznych". Nowy periodyk naukowy poświęcony hi-storii i teologii stał się przestrzenią, w której znalazły miejsce efekty pracy nauko-wej śląskich teologów. Wraz z rozwojem czasopisma poszerzał się także jego profil i wkrótce znalazły w nim swoje miejsce, głównie za sprawą ks. prof. Wincentego myszora, publikacje związane z patrystyką, kształtującą się na polu polskiej teo-logii jako odrębna dyscyplina. W niniejszym opracowaniu chciałbym przedstawić, w jakim zakresie publi-kacje z dziedziny patrologii i szeroko rozumianej historii Kościoła starożytnego weszły w skład śląskiego periodyku. z racji na specyfikę dyscypliny i tematu po-stanowiłem wyróżnić następujące grupy publikacji: tłumaczenia i komentarze do fragmentów dzieł patrystycznych, artykuły poświęcone patrologom i badaczom antyku chrześcijańskiego, artykuły poświęcone zagadnieniom szczegółowym oraz recenzje, sprawozdania i omówienia.

Exegesegeschichtlich ist die Erklärung von Ps 140 (141) 2 ein methodisches Musterbeispiel patristischer Schriftauslegung: Nach der Vergewisserung über den auszulegenden Text einschließlich textkritischer Varianten bietet Chrysostomus eine historische Sacherklärung des alttestamentlichen Phänomens, auch wenn er dieses nicht nur im Lichte allgemeiner Kultterminologie, sondern auch der neutestamentlichen Rezeption vor allem im Hebräerbrief, aber auch zum Beispiel in 1 Petr 2,5 erschließt und somit zumindest für biblisch informierte Ohren bereits in der historisch-sachlichen Interpretation auch metaphorische Resonanzen anklingen läßt. Im dritten Schritt folgt die paränetische Aktualisierung für das Auditorium in Form jener anthropologischen Allegorese, die schon im biblischen Vergleich des Gebets mit Weihrauch und des Erhebens der Hände mit dem Abendopfer angelegt ist und im vierten Schritt in den direkten Imperativ mündet; 1 Petr 2,5 mit seiner kultmetaphorischen Ekklesiologie und die paulinische Rede von den Christen als Tempel und Leib Christi sind wichtige Intertexte dieser abschließenden Anwendung.
Liturgiehistorisch bezeugt schon die Einleitung zur ganzen Homilie die auch sonst breit belegte Verwendung von Ps 140 (141) als Abend- und Ps 62 (63) als Morgenpsalm der Tagzeitenliturgie in Antiochien; bemerkenswert ist der Hinweis darauf, daß die ganze Gemeinde psalliert und sich nicht etwa nur durch einen Kehrvers an der Psalmodie beteiligt.
Theologisch bedeutsam ist die Erklärung, durch den Gesang dieser Psalmen würden die Sünden des Tages getilgt; es handelt sich um eine Auffassung, die umso klarer der Überzeugung des Chrysostomus entspringt, als sie nicht wirklich aus dem biblischen Text zu gewinnen ist. Der Tagzeitenliturgie Bußcharakter zuzuschreiben, lag im Zug der Zeit und war wohl auch ein Grund für die seit dieser Epoche – wenn auch nicht im Antiochien des Chrysostomus – bezeugte Verbreitung von Ps 50 (51) als Morgenpsalm; auch die Dimension der Versöhnung wird gelegentlich angesprochen. Der Psalmodie selbst wird freilich nirgends so deutlich die sakramentliche Wirkung der Sündenvergebung zugeschrieben wie in der vorliegenden Homilie zum täglichen Abendpsalm 140 (141), welcher nach Johannes Chrysostomus von den Vätern angeordnet wurde, damit er „als ein Heilmittel gesagt werde, das rettet und von Sünden reinigt“ (PG 55, 427) – ein Höhepunkt der altkirchlichen Auffassung von der Wirksamkeit des Wortes Gottes.

Proponendo una sintesi dei contenuti di ciascuno di essi, questo Dizionario offre un quadro completo di tutta la vastissima produzione di Agostino, permettendo ad un vasto pubblico di lettori di avere a disposizione uno strumento utile di consultazione e di orientamento.

The author analyses the evolution of the idea of magic reflected in the decrees of Christian Roman Emperors included in the Theodosian Code. He describes the place of the chapter De maleficis in the structure of Book IX of the Theodosian Code and analyses its constitutions. Special attention is paid to the possible sources of the norms described and to the connection between the evolution of Christianity and the tightening of anti-magic legislation.
