The LPWA network is very efficient in terms of power usage and bandwidth, because LPWA network uses low power and operates in narrow bandwidth with wide range of coverage. Most types of devices connected through LPWA network are various types of sensors, such as sensors for environmental conditions, health, transportation and sensors to measure energy usage. In this study, the devices which are connected to LPWA network are Smart Meters. Smart Meter is digital measuring device consisting of sensors with functions of measuring and recording data which is connected to a central database that can be accessed by users for information of usage and billing service. The type of LPWA network technology is LoRa. The purpose of this study is to design and plan an appropriate network to comply Smart Meter utilities requirement in the Jakarta and Tangerang area.

Currently, several cities in Indonesia have implemented smart city programs. Smart city implementation in Indonesia has not been supported by networks which are suitable for connectivity of equipment such as sensors. Sensors which are connected are still using cellular networks so they are not efficient in terms of power usage and bandwidth, where sensors only require small power and bandwidth. Salah satu program dari Nawacita pemerintah adalah membangun Indonesia dari pinggiran dengan memp... more Salah satu program dari Nawacita pemerintah adalah membangun Indonesia dari pinggiran dengan memperkuat daerah-daerah dan desa dalam kerangka negara kesatuan. Salah satu aspek dari program pembangunan pemerintah adalah pembangunan dibidang teknologi informasi dan komunikasi. Untuk mewujudkan program pembangunan dibidang teknologi komunikasi dan informasi yang merata, hal yang dilakukan pemerintah salah satunya adalah dengan mengadakan proyek Palapa Ring. Palapa Ring merupakan proyek infrastruktur telekomunikasi berupa pembangunan serat optik di seluruh Indonesia sepanjang 36.000 kilometer. Proyek itu terdiri atas tujuh lingkar kecil serat optik (untuk wilayah Sumatera, Jawa, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Sulawesi, dan Maluku) dan satu backhaul untuk menghubungkan semuanya. Namun, Palapa Ring ini tidak menyelesaikan semua permasalahan untuk pemerataan akses teknologi informasi dan komunikasi di Indonesia, untuk itu diperlukan suatu teknologi lain yaitu teknologi satelit.
Teknologi satelit yang dimaksud disini adalah bukan teknologi satelit konvensional, namun teknologi satelit dengan kecepatan tinggi atau yang dikenal dengan nama High Throughput Satellite (HTS). Jika teknologi satelit konvensional hanya mampu mengirimkan informasi dengan kecepatan 155Mbps per transponder, High Througput Satellite bisa mengirimkan informasi dengan kecepatan sampai 10Gbps per transponder. High Throughput Satellite diharapkan bisa menjadi salah satu solusi untuk pemerataan akses internet di seluruh Indonesia, terutama untuk bisa menjangkau daerah-daerah terpencil dan terluar di Indonesia.
