THE AGEYEVSKY BURIAL MOUND OF THE LATE BRONZE AGE IN THE BASHKIR TRANS-URALS2 , 2022

The mounds are situated within the Srubnaya–Alakul contact zone in the South Trans-Urals. Mound 1 contained seven graves located on the mound-site according to the central-circular principle where the peripheral burials form pairs. The central grave contained a disturbed burial of two adults; children and adolescents were buried in most peripheral graves (5). Only one peripheral grave matched the size of an adult’s grave. Presumably it contained the remains of cremation (?). Children’s graves (3) were solitary, adolescents’ graves (2) were paired. The adolescents were buried in twin graves; in one grave the dead were placed on one (left) side, in the other – facing each other. In the center of Mound 2 there was the only disturbed burial of two adults. All burials were made in soil graves. The majority of graves are covered with stone slabs. The grave-goods are represented by vessels and decorations. The burial rite and grave goods are analogous to the Srubnaya–Alakul necropolises of classical (developed) stage of the nearby territory and the whole of the South Trans-Urals. However it is distinguished by peculiar features: paired peripheral burials in the multi-grave Mound 1 and the prevailing orientation of those buried in the southern sector.

An essential feature of the burial is the different state of the remains of originally buried individuals (from those found in perfect order to a pile of bones). It reflects different time intervals between the burial of the first and second deceased. Three types are identified: (1) the remains of the originally buried person are in the articulate state and full order (1 burial); (2) some bones of the originally buried individual are shifted or partially absent, but the articulation of the skeleton is generally preserved (3 burials); (3) the remains of the originally buried individual are in the form of a pile of bones (6 burials). In five cases women were later buried to the originally buried men and vice versa men were later buried to the originally buried women (3 cases). Taking into consideration the fact that both men (4 cases) and women (4 cases) were buried on their left side (a position which is considered to be more prestigious) allows speaking about their equal posthumous status. Whether the burials were planned (5?) or spontaneous (4), they did not depend on the sex of individuals buried later. The burials with the central location of the grave under the mound prevail, which indicates a higher social status of the individuals in such burials. The peculiarity of practically each non-simultaneous burial shows that they were not the result of an established cult practice. Each burial has its individual history. Burying both a woman to the originally buried man and a man to the originally buried woman can probably be explained by the desire of equal spouses to be buried together in case of their non-simultaneous demise despite the time interval between the deaths and their sequence. The uneven ratio between the quantity of simultaneous (70) and non-simultaneous (10) Alakul paired burials can be explained by the higher possibility of spouses to be buried together in case of their simultaneous or close in time death than in case of a longer period of time between their non-simultaneous deaths. Nevertheless, the burials examined show that a number of married couples, apparently, were distinguished by a special strength of marital unions, embodied in their repose in one grave, regardless of the difference in the time of death.

Late Bronze Age paired burials in Central Eurasia are represented by sustainable series in the bu... more Late Bronze Age paired burials in Central Eurasia are represented by sustainable series in the burials of four cultural groups: Alakul, Tazabagyab, Beshkent-Vakhsh and the culture of the Svat River Valley. Some time ago, a hypothesis was advanced that the paired burial rite spread as a result of the Andronovo migration to the south. Our article compares samples of these burials by the most significant features: simultaneity and non-simultaneity of burials, age of the buried, nuances of their position relative to each other. We support the Alakul origin of the paired burial rite in Tazabagyab culture. In Beshkent-Vakhsh culture, this rite is the continuation of the local tradition of the 4th century BC. At the same time, it is impossible to fully reject the Andronovo influence on the paired burial rite in Beshkent-Vakhsh culture as it was widely spread in Namazga VI Period, which was the time of the largest penetration of the Andronovo bearers into Central Asia. The Alakul and Svat burials show greatest resemblance. Still, their direct relation is not indisputable. We can state that the appearance of the paired burial rite in Central Asia does not have a single-line solution. In Tazabagyab culture, it is certainly an Andronovo influence. In Beshkent-Vakhsh and Svat cultures, the Andronovo influence on this rite does not have any reliable evidence but is not excluded.

Paired non-si multaneous burials of the Southern Urals and Central Asia : comparative characteristics
The rite of the non-simultaneous paired heterosexual burial has a stable tradition in the Alakul ... more The rite of the non-simultaneous paired heterosexual burial has a stable tradition in the Alakul (Southern Urals), the Tazabagyab and the Bishkent-Vakhsh (Central Asia) burial grounds. An analysis of the burials according to the main indicators (the state of the remains of a previously buried dead person, his/her gender, and also the position of the deceased on one side or another, depending on his/her gender) shows the undoubted similarity of the Tazabagyab and Bishkent-Vakhsh non-simultaneous burials. The Alakul’ non-simultaneous burials are somewhat different from the Central Asian ones, however, there are certain similarities with them: the burial of men to women and the position of women on the left side, and men on the right. One of the possible explanations for the similarity of the ritual of the paired non-simultaneous burials in the three cultures considered is the presence of a common cultural component.

A collection of bone and horn tools and products from the Late Bronze Age settleme... more A collection of bone and horn tools and products from the Late Bronze Age settlement of Novo-Bayramgulovo-1 in the Southern Trans-Ural region is considered in the paper. The collection consists of 119 artefacts. It includes typical tools of tanning production, a big group of arrowheads, different individual bone products. There is a remarkable set of astragals in the collection. The use-wear analysis of all objects of the collection is made. The authors conclude that by the Late Bronze Age in the territory of the Eurasian steppes there was a tradition of processing of bone and horn and use of bone tools/products. The collection of Novo-Bayramgulovo-1 bone products corresponds to this tradition.

э The article is devoted to excavation materials of two early nomadic barrows in the Khaybullinsky District, Republic of Bashkortostan. We have investigated two burials in Barrow 1. The first one contains a heap of adult’s bones (a secondary burial?). Here we can see the skull, the mandible, all long bones, both pelvic bones, the sacrum and several ribs. The vertebrae, hand and foot bones are missing. There are no grave goods. The location of the burial in front of the entrance to the burial ground and the set of bones make it possible to assume it to be a human sacrifice. The second, central burial is female. The burial has been looted since ancient times. The only finds left in the burial are two ceramic vessels, coloured glass beads, an iron knife, bronze arrowheads and a piece of chalk. A single burial in Barrow 2 has also been looted, with only bronze arrowheads preserved. One vessel is of special interest. It has a spherical body and is decorated with two cone-shaped projections. This vessel has few analogies in the South Urals which are rather widely dated. The closest analogy is traced among the Sarmatian antiquities in Ukraine. It is the Ushkalka Burial in the Kherson Region. Once again, this fact supports the assumption made earlier that the Ushkalka Burial belongs to migrants from the East. The decanter-shaped glass beads are a very rare find. Similar beads were found in the Mechetsay and Pokrovka Burials in the Orenburg Region. Analysis of the burial rite and grave goods shows that Yakovlevka-5 Burial Mound dates back to the 4th century BC.

K. Fedorov, V. N. Vasilyev and Y. V. Rafikova in Uchalinsky, Baimaksky, Aezelilovsky, Khaibullinsky Districts of the Republic of Bashkortostan and Kvarkensky District of the Orenburg Region of the Russian Federation. The first issue of “The Burial Mounds of South Urals” contained the research of six burial sites (11 mounds and 34 burials) in Uchalinsky and Abzelilovsky Districts of the Republic of Bashkortostan. 22 of those burials refer to the Bronze Epoch, 5 – to the Early Iron Age and 7 – to Muslim burials. Besides, chance finds – 5 daggers and 1 stone altar – were also studied. All burials are of undoubted interest, the materials of some of them are unique. The materials of two Bronze Epoch burials on the territory of Abzelilovsky District – Mikhailovsky II and Selivanovsky II – refer to the Alakul Culture with some influence of the Timber – Frame Culture traditions. It is primarily expressed in the northern orientation of the buried. The cultural specificity of the burial grounds on the territory where monuments of the Magnitogorsk Variety of the Alakul Culture are located are partly determined by this zone of close interaction of the Alakul and Timber – Frame population of South Urals. These burial grounds date between the 18th – 16th centuries B. C., to the time of the existence of mixed Timber – Frame – Alakul Complexes in South Urals. Burial Mound I of the Mikhailovka II Burial Ground is located on a high terrace of the Yangelka River bank and refers to the Bronze Epoch. Under the barrow, we excavated an impressive stone circle, which served as the facingof its edges. Two burials – one central and one peripheral – were found on the site under the mound. Fragments of unornamented vessels of splendid quality and peculiar form were excavated in a large burial pit that had been fully plundered. In the peripheral burial a similar vessel was found intact. On the totality of the signs, the Mikhailovka II Mound is unmatched among the known burial grounds of the Late Bronze Epoch in Magnitigorsk District. All this suggests that the mound served as a tomb for the elite of the local Alakul population group. In the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground located 2. 5 km to the south-west of the Mikhailovka Burial Ground on a low shore of Lake Chebarkul two mounds of the Late Bronze Age were excavated. All in all Mound 1 and Mound 5 contain 17 burials. The burials are intact except the central one in Mound 1 destroyed in our days. Mound 1 of the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground contained 14 burials: 6 single burials (3 child burials and 3 adult ones), 5 paired burials of opposite sexes in which the buried were placed facing each other, one double burial the children in which the children were lying on the same side, one burial of four children. Two children in this burial were placed facing each other and two children were lying on the same side. In paired burials there are children (Burial 13), a child and a teenager (Burial 14), teenagers (Burial 2), two burials of adults – a man and a woman (Burials 10 and 12). Such great number of paired burials of the dead of various age concentrated under one barrow is unprecedented among burial complexes of the developed Late Bronze Age not only in South Urals but on the whole territory of steppe Eurasia. The change of the position of the buried on a certain side in relation to the floor depending on the kind of the burial – paired or single – also has no analogues: in single burials men are lying on the left side, women – on the right; in paired burials vice versa – men on the right side, women – on the left side. Probably we see here the beginning of the process of the Alakul funeral rite transformation that resulted in the fixed position of women on the left side and men on the right side. We observe it, irrespective of the type of burial, single or paired, in the funeral rite of the Central Asian Tazabagjabsky Culture. In our opinion the Selivanovsky paired burials possibly reflect a real family union between a man and a woman. What kind of wedlock it was is a complicated problem. The clarification of this question requires a synthesis of all the knowledge of the Alakul society accumulated to date. Mound 5 of the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground contains three child burials. It is unique because of the stone anthropomorphic stele discovered at its west side. The finding of this stele testifies to the connection of the tradition of building menhir “alleys” and funeral and memorial rites of early South Urals population.

originally buried individuals (from those found in perfect order to a pile of bones). It reflects different time intervals between the burial of the first and second deceased. Three types are identified: (1) the remains of the originally buried person are in the
articulate state and full order (1 burial); (2) some bones of the originally buried individual are shifted or partially absent, but the articulation of the skeleton is generally preserved (3 burials); (3) the remains of the originally buried individual are in the
form of a pile of bones (6 burials). In five cases women were later buried to the originally buried men and vice versa men were later buried to the originally buried women (3 cases). Taking into consideration the fact that both men (4 cases) and
women (4 cases) were buried on their left side (a position which is considered to be more prestigious) allows speaking about their equal posthumous status. Whether the burials were planned (5?) or spontaneous (4), they did not depend on the sex of
individuals buried later. The burials with the central location of the grave under the mound prevail, which indicates a higher social status of the individuals in such burials. The peculiarity of practically each non-simultaneous burial shows that they
were not the result of an established cult practice. Each burial has its individual history. Burying both a woman to the originally buried man and a man to the originally buried woman can probably be explained by the desire of equal spouses to be buried
together in case of their non-simultaneous demise despite the time interval between the deaths and their sequence. The uneven ratio between the quantity of simultaneous (70) and non-simultaneous (10) Alakul paired burials can be explained by the higher
possibility of spouses to be buried together in case of their simultaneous or close in time death than in case of a longer period of time between their non-simultaneous deaths. Nevertheless, the burials examined show that a number of married couples,
apparently, were distinguished by a special strength of marital unions, embodied in their repose in one grave, regardless of the difference in the time of death.
Выделены три их варианта, в которых состояние останков ранее захороненных покойников отражает разные временные промежутки между подхоронениями. articulate state and full order (1 burial); (2) some bones of the originally buried individual are shifted or partially absent, but the articulation of the skeleton is generally preserved (3 burials); (3) the remains of the originally buried individual are in the
form of a pile of bones (6 burials).
Nevertheless, the burials examined show that a number of married couples,
apparently, were distinguished by a special strength of marital unions, embodied in their repose in one grave, regardless of the difference in the time of death.

of the burials according to the main indicators (the state of the remains of a previously buried dead person, his/her gender, and also the position of the deceased on one side or another, depending on his/her
gender) shows the undoubted similarity of the Tazabagyab and Bishkent-Vakhsh non-simultaneous burials. The Alakul’ non-simultaneous burials are somewhat different from the Central Asian ones, however, there are certain similarities with them: the burial of men to women and the position of women on the left side, and men on the right. One of the possible explanations for the similarity of the ritual of the paired non-simultaneous burials in the three cultures considered is the presence of a common cultural component.
and horn and use of bone tools/products. The collection of Novo-Bayramgulovo-1 bone products corresponds to this tradition.
The article is devoted to excavation materials of two early nomadic barrows in the Khaybullinsky District, Republic of Bashkortostan. We have investigated two burials in Barrow 1. The first one
contains a heap of adult’s bones (a secondary burial?). Here we
can see the skull, the mandible, all long bones, both pelvic bones,
the sacrum and several ribs. The vertebrae, hand and foot bones
are missing. There are no grave goods. The location of the burial in
front of the entrance to the burial ground and the set of bones make
it possible to assume it to be a human sacrifice. The second, central
burial is female. The burial has been looted since ancient times.
The only finds left in the burial are two ceramic vessels, coloured
glass beads, an iron knife, bronze arrowheads and a piece of chalk.
A single burial in Barrow 2 has also been looted, with only bronze
arrowheads preserved. One vessel is of special interest. It has a
spherical body and is decorated with two cone-shaped projections.
This vessel has few analogies in the South Urals which are rather
widely dated. The closest analogy is traced among the Sarmatian
antiquities in Ukraine. It is the Ushkalka Burial in the Kherson Region. Once again, this fact supports the assumption made earlier
that the Ushkalka Burial belongs to migrants from the East. The
decanter-shaped glass beads are a very rare find. Similar beads
were found in the Mechetsay and Pokrovka Burials in the Orenburg
Region. Analysis of the burial rite and grave goods shows that Yakovlevka-5 Burial Mound dates back to the 4th century BC.
was carried out from the end of 1980s to the beginning of 2000s by the expeditions of V. K. Fedorov, V. N. Vasilyev and
Y. V. Rafikova in Uchalinsky, Baimaksky, Aezelilovsky, Khaibullinsky Districts of the Republic of Bashkortostan and
Kvarkensky District of the Orenburg Region of the Russian Federation. The first issue of “The Burial Mounds of South
Urals” contained the research of six burial sites (11 mounds and 34 burials) in Uchalinsky and Abzelilovsky Districts
of the Republic of Bashkortostan. 22 of those burials refer to the Bronze Epoch, 5 – to the Early Iron Age and 7 –
to Muslim burials. Besides, chance finds – 5 daggers and 1 stone altar – were also studied.
All burials are of undoubted interest, the materials of some of them are unique.
The materials of two Bronze Epoch burials on the territory of Abzelilovsky District – Mikhailovsky II and Selivanovsky
II – refer to the Alakul Culture with some influence of the Timber – Frame Culture traditions. It is primarily expressed
in the northern orientation of the buried. The cultural specificity of the burial grounds on the territory where monuments
of the Magnitogorsk Variety of the Alakul Culture are located are partly determined by this zone of close interaction
of the Alakul and Timber – Frame population of South Urals. These burial grounds date between the 18th – 16th
centuries B. C., to the time of the existence of mixed Timber – Frame – Alakul Complexes in South Urals. Burial Mound I of the Mikhailovka II Burial Ground is located on a high terrace of the Yangelka River bank and
refers to the Bronze Epoch. Under the barrow, we excavated an impressive stone circle, which served as the facingof its edges. Two burials – one central and one peripheral – were found on the site under the mound. Fragments of
unornamented vessels of splendid quality and peculiar form were excavated in a large burial pit that had been fully
plundered. In the peripheral burial a similar vessel was found intact. On the totality of the signs, the Mikhailovka
II Mound is unmatched among the known burial grounds of the Late Bronze Epoch in Magnitigorsk District. All this
suggests that the mound served as a tomb for the elite of the local Alakul population group.
In the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground located 2. 5 km to the south-west of the Mikhailovka Burial Ground on a low
shore of Lake Chebarkul two mounds of the Late Bronze Age were excavated. All in all Mound 1 and Mound 5 contain
17 burials. The burials are intact except the central one in Mound 1 destroyed in our days.
Mound 1 of the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground contained 14 burials: 6 single burials (3 child burials and 3 adult
ones), 5 paired burials of opposite sexes in which the buried were placed facing each other, one double burial the
children in which the children were lying on the same side, one burial of four children. Two children in this burial were
placed facing each other and two children were lying on the same side. In paired burials there are children (Burial 13),
a child and a teenager (Burial 14), teenagers (Burial 2), two burials of adults – a man and a woman (Burials 10 and 12).
Such great number of paired burials of the dead of various age concentrated under one barrow is unprecedented
among burial complexes of the developed Late Bronze Age not only in South Urals but on the whole territory of steppe
Eurasia. The change of the position of the buried on a certain side in relation to the floor depending on the kind of the
burial – paired or single – also has no analogues: in single burials men are lying on the left side, women – on the right;
in paired burials vice versa – men on the right side, women – on the left side. Probably we see here the beginning of the
process of the Alakul funeral rite transformation that resulted in the fixed position of women on the left side and men on
the right side. We observe it, irrespective of the type of burial, single or paired, in the funeral rite of the Central Asian
Tazabagjabsky Culture.
In our opinion the Selivanovsky paired burials possibly reflect a real family union between a man and a woman.
What kind of wedlock it was is a complicated problem. The clarification of this question requires a synthesis of all the
knowledge of the Alakul society accumulated to date.
Mound 5 of the Selivanovsky II Burial Ground contains three child burials. It is unique because of the stone
anthropomorphic stele discovered at its west side. The finding of this stele testifies to the connection of the tradition of
building menhir “alleys” and funeral and memorial rites of early South Urals population.
