This study aimed to describe the experiences of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care units (ICU). The data were analyzed by content analysis on 16 ICU patients with COVID-19. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews. Three categories were identified: (a) captured by a challenging incident with subcategories: perceived sudden and challenging death, fear of carelessness in overcrowding, worry about the family, and frustration with stigmatizing; (b) the flourishing of life with subcategories: spiritual-awakening, resilience in the face of life challenges, promoting health behaviors, and striving for recovery; and (c) honoring the blessings with subcategories: understanding the importance of nurses, realizing the value of family, and realizing the value of altruism. COVID-19 survivors experienced both positive and negative experiences. The results of this study could help health care providers identify the needs of ICU patients with COVID-19, including psycholo...

Choosing a career is an important decision for each individual, which is affected by many different factors. The process of entering nursing, as one of the pivotal healthcare discipline, certainly affects quality of care, and retention of nurses in the profession. Exploring factors affecting the students' decision to enter nursing. This qualitative content analysis was carried at the school of Nursing and Midwifery of Tehran University of medical sciences. The semi structured interview method was used to conduct this qualitative study on 11 nursing freshmen in 2010. We transcribed the interviews verbatim and analyzed them using the conventional content analysis approach. Four main categories, reflecting the factors affecting the participants' decision to enter nursing emerged in this study: Capabilities of the profession, coercion, having an interest in the medical and allied health fields, and receiving positive feedbacks. Background Liver transplantation is a life-saving intervention for many patients with end-stage liver disease. In the past, evaluation of successful liver transplantation was based on patients’ survival rate. However, in recent years this evaluation has been based on patients’ quality of life. Various instruments have been developed to evaluate patients’ quality of life. Nonetheless, scholars still believe that it is crucial to develop a standardized and disease specific instrument for evaluating the quality of life in liver transplant recipients. Objectives The aim of this paper was to describe the development and psychometric testing process of a quality of life instrument specific to liver transplant recipients. Materials and Methods Initial items of this instrument were extracted from a conventional content analysis study, and then were completed with findings of related international literature. The face validity was assessed by interviewing with four liver transplant recipient...

Introduction: Education of professional ethics is a necessary section of nursing curriculum. To change attitude and function, traditional educational methods are not effective versus active models. This study conducted to comparison of two active learning educational models; roleplaying with jurisprudential inquiry model Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 79 nursing students were selected by stage sampling. Half of them received their education via role-playing and the other half student received it by jurisprudential inquiry model. Data collected via a writing test in two stages. The test designed and validated according to ethical reasoning resources and analyzed with SPSS software. Results: Paired t-test did not show any significant difference between mean scores of ethics in four weeks after education with three months later. Mean score of professional ethics in related with colleges, three months after education, showed a significant difference among jurisprudential inq...

Background: One of the participatory learning approaches is the puzzle teaching method. Depending on the nature of the subject and the type of learners, this strategy can produce a variety of outcomes. The purpose of this study was to see how well the puzzle teaching style worked in the undergraduate nursing program's home nursing care course. Methods: This is a three-year evaluation study utilizing a qualitative methodology that took place between 2016 and 2019. The teaching technique was employed for a number of sessions of a home nursing care course during the first phase, and an evaluation was conducted at the end of the course using purposive sampling and focus group interviews with 11 students. The results of the first phase's evaluation led to changes in the procedure in the second phase, and at the end of that course, the evaluation was repeated with the 13 students. Further modifications to the teaching style were made, and a re-evaluation with ten students was condu...

Background & Aim: Academic incivility has a common problem in academic settings including nursing schools. The aim of the present study was to explore nursing students’ experiences of faculty incivility. Methods & Materials: This was a conventional qualitative content analysis approach. Fourteen bachelor’s nursing students were purposefully recruited from two faculty of nursing in, Karaj, Iran. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed via the conventional content analysis. Results: We derived two main categories from students’ experiences; “hidden faculty incivility” and “obvious faculty incivility”. Hidden incivility contained four subcategories, includes lack of mastery over the subject matter, inattentiveness to the learning climate of the class, inability to manage the class, and unfair evaluation. Obvious incivility also included the three subcategories of speech-behavior contradiction, authoritative behavior, and unconventional behavior. Conclusion: T...

Admission to intensive care units (ICUs) can be a stress-ful experience for both the patients and their families. In addition to being affected by the pain and severity of the critical diseases, sleeplessness, immobility, and over-whelming noises of the ICU equipments, ICU patients are psychologically affected by the anxiety experienced after overhearing strange and unfamiliar conversations between the staff and visitors regarding the patients' conditions (1-3). The critical conditions of the patients can be a source of stress for their families as well; this situation is sometimes referred to as a family crisis (4, 5). These days, the role of families in the recovery of critical patients is considered very important, and health profes-sionals focus on family-and patient-centered systems of care. Therefore, it has long been suggested that open and flexible visiting policies can positively affect the patients with critical conditions; such visiting policies can help their familie...

Today, critical care visitation is considered an important aspect of patient-centred care and its positive effects on patients and their relatives have been demonstrated. However, restricted visiting hours in the intensive care units (ICUs) is often an adopted norm. The reasons for such restricted policies in Iran still remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to identify the rationales for restricted visiting hours in adult ICUs in Iran. A qualitative design using a thematic analysis approach was used for data gathering and analysis. Participants in this study were six nurses, three head nurses, two patients and four visitors. They were chosen through purposive sampling method. Data were gathered through semi-structured individual interviews. The data analysis resulted in three themes: 'health protection', 'safety promotion' and 'privacy preservation'. The result showed that through restricted visiting hours, nurses try to protect vulnerable ICU patients from physical, psychological and legal risk. Although the ICU nurses' concerns seem reasonable in some cases, a review of visiting policies in order to meet the needs of patients and their families is essential. Effective supervision by charge nurses and regulation of environmental activities with visiting hours can resolve many concerns. Health care professionals, especially nurses, are required to create the conditions in which patients' family members are informed about the patients' health status and patients can be visited in suitable ward conditions.

Pregnancy and parenting have been part of human life throughout history and liver transplant recipients are not any exception. This paper reports successful pregnancies in two liver transplant recipients in Iran. The first case was a 34-year old woman who had undergone orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) at Shiraz Namazi Educational Hospital in 2002. She decided to get pregnant seven years after the operation. During pregnancy, immunosuppressive therapy continued, except Mycophenolate Mofetil which has an absolute contra-indication in pregnancy. The patient was followed up during pregnancy by the transplant team as well as a gynecologist. She faced no significant complications and the liver function was stable during pregnancy. She later underwent a Cesarean section in the 38(th) week of gestation and the newborn was a healthy girl weighing 2480g with an Apgar score of 8 at the time of birth. There were no evidences of prematurity or structural abnormalities in the newborn. The s...
