She had been his lover since childhood and he took good care of her. He was a fine hunter and he cleared and planted a large vegetable plot—the couple lived well. They always slept together in the same hammock and hugged each other tightly all night long. They were happy, in spite of the fact that the wife had a strange habit. Every night her head separated itself from her body and went searching for game meat in other huts and villages. No matter how much the husband hunted or how much food he provided, his wife always wanted to go somewhere else and eat more. It seems that the wife had a lot of lice but wouldn't let anyone pick them out, and that it was the lice that were always so hungry and cut her head off from her neck—at least that's what some people say. Could she really be so greedy? Wasn't it enough, the game that her husband so lovingly provided? And how did the head eat? When it swallowed, why didn't the food just fall out ...

We discuss some of the social factors accounting for the contact among the speakers of these languages. We also comment on the network of relationships established between the speakers of these languages, which have contributed to the survival of the languages.

The indigenous tribes of the Brazilian rainforests are no-longer on the verge of extinction, but their culture is under threat. Fearing that the narratives which had sustained them over centuries might die with, Betty Mindlin was determined to record these legends and the result is a startling piece of anthropology. Inspired by the work of Claude Levi-Strauss, mindlin has shown that what often appears to be the creation of a fantastical, isolated imagination is just a fragment, part of a much larger whole. The stories recounted in Barbecued Husbands are as old as humanity: love and hate, jealousy and revenge, life after death, totems and taboos, erotic solitude, romantic love, mothers and daughters, masculinity. All this is discussed with an openness that would surprise a Western psychoanalyst. Most of the stories were narrated by tribespeople in their own languages and the translations were carefully checked with them before they appeared in print. The collaboration between the author and the narrator is close throughout, making this book a unique document and an important reference work. Reading like a novel, this is an oral history suffused with magic realism.
