The arrival of the N‘arin troop on the day of the battle of Kadesh allowed Ramesses II to turn to his advantage a situation compromised by the unforeseen attack of the Hittite chariots. This study examines the numerous opinions expressed for more than a century on the identity of this troop and the route which it followed to arrive at the opportune moment to the aid of the camp established by the division of Amon. It appears that this Egyptian troop coming from the coast of Amurru had been installed there at the end of the campaign of the year 4 of Ramesses II, in support of local king Benteshina, and that Ramses had decided to gather all his forces in the western plain of Kadesh before his offensive against the city. However the presence of the Hittites and their allies in Kadesh and Old Kadesh (Sefinet Nuh) disrupted his plans. This study proposes a detailed analysis of the caption R 11, the lacunae of which are restored, as well as of the passage of the Poem mentioning the seku tepy (P 63-64), which clearly concerns the detachment of the (N‘arin) troop during the previous campaign. Routes of the Egyptian troops to and from Kadesh are clarified, by highlighting the mention of the wood of Rbwi in caption R 11, which clearly points to the region of Laboué about forty km to the South of Kadesh. As regards the cuneiform sources, the mention of Ramesses' three armies on tablet KBo I 15+19 (+) 22 is explained: they are (1) the N‘arin troop, (2) the divisions of Amon and Rê, (3) the divisions of Ptah and Seth. As regards the operations mentioned by the "Lettre du Général" from Ugarit, they do not concern the campaign of year 5, but that of year 4, when Ramesses II went to Amurru to free Benteshina from the temporary occupation of Ugarit on the plain of Akkar

Public cible Niveau requis : Aucun. Destiné aux enseignants et étudiants universitaires, cet ouvrage séduira également les amateurs chevronnés qui, individuellement ou en groupe, souhaitent apprendre l’écriture et la langue égyptiennes en vue de la lecture des textes. Cet ouvrage fait partie de la série pédagogique « Égyptien hiéroglyphique » (http://www.safran.be/proddetail.php?prod=EgyptienHiero).

This manual presents a pedagogical approach to the grammar of Middle Egyptian, the classical language of pharaonic Egypt. It is the English version of the second edition of the Grammaire pratique du Moyen Egyptien, published in the same Series.
The first part of this grammar book is dedicated to hieroglyphs. It provides an explanation of this writing system, presenting a selection of the 200 most important signs to memorise, as well as a basic vocabulary list that is easy to learn. Another page of this webpage includes an animation showing how to draw all these signs (http://www.safranpublishers.com/proddetail.php?prod=LCA23DRAW).
The grammatical commentary begins with an overview of the main types of clauses attested. It goes on with a systematic study of nouns and associated elements (adjectives, determiners, genitive constructions, prepositions, pronouns), the examination of non-verbal clauses, for which a verb “to be” will be introduced in the English translation, and the description of suffix and non-suffix verbal forms (morphology and syntax). It closes with a summary of the uses of auxiliaries and particles.
In addition to the grammatical explanations, the work presents a series of common phrases and expressions: names of kings and individuals, a selection of anthroponyms and titles, and expressions used in traditional funerary inscriptions.
The work continues with a list of more than 800 signs, a vocabulary list of more than 2,300 words, the references to the examples quoted, and a chronological table.
The third part concludes with a series of exercises and their correct version.

[This book is also available in English : "Hieroglyphic Egyptian. A Practical Grammar of Middle Egyptian", http://www.safranpublishers.com/proddetail.php?prod=LCA23]
– les noms et groupes nominaux ;
– les propositions non-verbales ;
– les verbes et propositions verbales ;
