Si cette question a longtemps été ignorée, l'attention, qui lui est désormais portée, tend à intégrer la nécessité d'une telle réflexion dans le processus de conception artistique lui-même. Dès lors qu'on accepte cette intégration, le rôle de l'artiste change. Il ne peut plus se rapportera sa pratique sur un mode identique à celui utilisé par l'artiste romantique. C'est donc une nouvelle figure de l'artiste qui naît sous nos yeux : celle de l'artiste consultant.

Venu à Skol en ce jeudi soir d’été pour entendre les participants de l’École erratique de François Deck nous présenter leurs travaux et relater leur expérience, je me retrouve en fait au cœur même du dispositif imaginé par l’artiste consultant. Car loin d’être terminé, le projet dont je croyais qu’on nous parlerait se poursuit toujours, c’est-à-dire jusque dans l’activité de diffusion publique censée en rendre compte. La conversation, qui s’est menée au sein de groupes de cinq participants selon la règle stipulée par Deck, n’est au fond pas terminée, et elle nous englobe et nous engage maintenant toutes et tous – dans ce grand cercle que nous formons et qui ne permet pas de distinguer entre participants initiaux de l’École et « simples spectateurs ». Et du sens et de l’allure qu’il convient de donner à cette présentation qui se métamorphose en assemblée, de ces interrogations sur ce qu’il convient de faire de notre présence commune, de quoi nous devons parler au juste, et de la responsabilité qui nous incombe au final de décider de cette situation, il sera justement question dans les questions, les commentaires et les réflexions qui sont échangés.
Plutôt que d’un discours sur la chose, donc, l’expérience de la chose même ; plutôt que le transfert d’une connaissance maîtrisée et formalisée sur une expérience qui a eu lieu, la production fluide d’un savoir collectif carburant à sa propre immersion dans une expérience dont il ne maîtrise pas le cadre et qu’il cherche à connaître. (Au fond, pas de possibilité de métalangage ou, plutôt, le métalangage et le commentaire qu’on peut donner de l’expérience et de l’école s’y trouvent aussitôt réintégrés pour l’alimenter : paradoxe d’une énonciation qui fusionne l’usage et la mention.) Trouble de ne pas savoir sur quel pied danser, mais jubilation aussi de jouer de ce déséquilibre même, de découvrir que le sens de cette situation s’invente et se révèle sous nos yeux, à même nos questions et interventions.

Plusieurs s’interrogent, d’ailleurs, faisant état de leur malaise ou, au contraire, de l’euphorie que suscite cette situation ouverte, profondément indéterminée, nullement chaotique pourtant, puisque la parole circule harmonieusement, comme une errance sereine du discours qui se plaît à chercher sa raison d’être, mais jouit justement de se produire et de se relancer sans cesse pour trouver sa forme. Tant les participants « avertis » de l’école erratique, qui nous ont précédés dans l’expérience du processus, que nous-mêmes, visiteurs venus par curiosité pour découvrir ce que c’est que cette école erratique et ce qu’elle pourrait peut-être nous enseigner, nous nous interrogeons donc à propos de la teneur et de la forme à donner à la situation où nous nous trouvons – notre présence collective à Skol en ce jeudi soir d’été – mais finalement, la situation prend forme et s’incarne dans toutes ces répliques où nous pensons à voix haute. Et le serpent se surprend de découvrir que c’est sa propre queue qu’il est en train de mordre.
En me remémorant aujourd’hui la sensation enivrante d’apesanteur cognitive que m’a laissée cette dense et surprenante petite heure et demie d’incertitude dansante et joueuse, je pense à une œuvre-énoncé de Robert Barry qui exprime peut-être le mieux la teneur de cette expérience que nous avons partagée : Some places to which we can come and for a while « be free to think about what we are going to do » (1970).

la perplexité des uns peut... more Le questionnement suspend une résolution hâtive du vrai et du faux, la perplexité des uns peut alors enrichir la raison des autres. L'élaboration d'une question nécessite une condensation qui lui confère une fonction de repérage. Cette condensation du sens et de la forme permet de juxtaposer plusieurs questions dont les contenus seraient autrement restés éloignés. Cet agencement de questions favorise l'apparition de nouvelles significations et constitue un nouveau seuil qui peut permettre d'aborder des problèmes complexes. Du point de vue du positionnement des acteurs, répondre aux questions telles qu'elles sont posées, ou prendre l'initiative de les fabriquer, individuellement et collectivement, change la donne. Une question qui résonne peut devenir l'agent d'une bifurcation dans l'orientation du débat, voire des décisions qui seront prises.
