Rolling is widely used forming process, which can have high production figures and precise control of final product. Rolling is classified in two major parts the cold rolling and hot rolling. Every part has its own theory, development of rolling process and subsequently the designing of the cold rolling mill components, like rolls and rolling mill housing. The aim of the present paper is to understand the various methodologies which are used to design the cold rolling mill. We have focused on the history of the rolling process; it is understand that the rolling process was adopted since year 1590. Although it was raw method but it initiated the slitting rolling mill and the actual experimentation were started from year 1670. In those days rolling was concerned with rolling of bars only after few years the rolling of bars were started. We also tried to discuss the earlier patent...

Heat is conducted in solid material up to its surface & finally the heat is rejected by convection from its surface to surrounding. Thus aim is to increase the heat transfer rates from the surface so that the temperature of solid surface is maintained within desired limit to avoid damage to the surface. In design consideration temperatures are fixed. Therefore there are two ways to increase heat transfer rate; either by increasing heat transfer coefficient (h) or by increasing the surface area. Increasing 'h' may require the installation of pump or fan. But approach may or may not be practical. The alternative is to increase the surface area by attaching extended surface called as fins. Fins are made highly conductive materials such as aluminum. Fins enhance heat transfer from a surface by exposing a layer surface area to convection & radiation. The fins like rectangular, trapezoidal, V-fins are ...

A solar air heater containing evacuated tubes is used for heating purpose. With the increased attention the efficiency of solar heating facilities and the performance of additional equipment are becoming increasingly important. In the present study, thinking is giving on the heat transfer characteristics of solar air heater with some modifications in design to increase air travel length. Performance ofsolar air dryer would be checked with and without air heater. Effect of climate conditions would also be studied on its performance.

The objective is to understand the combustion phenomena and resulted emissions. With the high cycle temperature of modern gas turbine, mechanical design remains difficult and a mechanical development program is inevitable. The rapidly increasing use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in recent years has had a major impact on the design process, greatly increasing the understanding of the complex flow and so reducing the amount of trial and error required. The gas turbine Can-combustor is designed to burn the fuel efficiently, reduce the emissions, and lower the wall temperature. In this study various parameters like air-fuel ratio, swirler angle of primary air inlet, axial position of dilution holes are changed to investigate the effect of these parameters on combustion chamber performance and emissions. In this st...

Today the emission regulations for power plant have become more stringent. The concern today with the combustion of fossil fuels is the new emission regulations for power plant with regards to carbon dioxides (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are responsible for smog and acid rain, and the carbon dioxides (CO2) are one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Another concern with fossil fuels is the high cost of imported oil. Alternative fuels that can be produced using local feed stocks, burn efficiently, and produce low emissions are needed. With the development of advanced technologies, coal, biomass, or waste products can be used in power generation systems to produce low emissions comparable to the ones obtained with natural gas fuel. This can be achieved through ...

Wind turbines and water wheels are built around the station. Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are installed at the station, and EDLCs are always charged by renewable energy. EDLCs are also mounted on the railcar. When the railcar stops at the station, EDLCs of the railcar are rapidly charged from EDLCs of the station. The battery driven light rail vehicle developed by Railway Technical Research Institute consumes the electricity of 2.5kWh per kilometer. Assuming that interval between stations is 500m; a railcar needs 1.3kWh to reach the next station. If we assume that railcars arrive and depart every 10 minutes, and railcars are operated for 18 hours a day, the power generation capacity of 99,000kWh is necessary at each station in one year. The quick social economic development of Vietnam stimulates great demand of qualit...

Burrs usually comprise of work piece material which has been plastically deformed during the machining process and projects beyond the desired edge of the work piece. The adverse effects of burrs depend on the component application but may include; stress concentration and related fatigue failure and increased wear on components and tools involved in the manufacture of the part. The minimisation or eradication of burrs produced during the drilling and milling and grooving process is therefore of the utmost importance. Currently the fo...

This was done through three main methods: preliminary research and data collection, the creation of a design model for Six Sigma academic course program establishment, and the creation of a Six Sigma academic course program syllabus. The preliminary research consisted of conducting a Six Sigma knowledge survey with the students of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, interviewing a Six Sigma expert, and examining current Six Sigma educational programs in other universities, businesses, and organizations. As a result of our observations, we determined that Six Sigma has become a large part of many companies and should be implemented into more engineering programs at universities nation-wide, including Worcester Polytechnic Institute. This can be done through a project based cours...
