Currently, eco-neighborhoods are a fully recognized "institution" that is called upon to implement the concept of sustainable community. Despite their diversity, there are common axes of organization such as (a) the empowerment and revival of the local community with the key elements of open governance, widespread participation and sound social and political networking (b) the implementation of sustainable practices in the management of natural and cultural resources, accessibility and the built environment. The paper aims to discuss the strategic thinking in ecodevelopment focusing on eco-neighborhoods in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Lessons learned from this region are the integration of the protection and enhancement of natural and cultural heritage given that natural and cultural resources are central for place identity. In this context, and after briefly discussing the development of eco-neighborhoods in Greece, examples of strategic urban interventions are being examined such as the potential regeneration of the port-industrial area of Drapetsona which, in our view, is striving for a vision of environmental protection and economic development based on both the reconnection of natural and cultural heritage and on the mobilisation of public-private cooperation in urban planning and governance.

This is linked to the constraint of motorized transport and the promotion of active-mobility modes (walking, cycling) which contribute to Green House Gas reduction targets as set in the European Union (EU) Climate Policy. Especially, walkable neighborhoods and 15-minute cities have been embraced in the post-pandemic city emphasizing the importance of walkability, which re-conciliates environmental concerns with liveable, sustainable and healthier communities. This research aims to construct a “walkability index” (WI) that may offer significant, reliable and quick results for the assessment of walkability in an urban area. The city of Larissa comprises the empirical field for its application. The index methodology is based on five main parameters: land use mix, residential density, pedestrian crossing connectivity, sidewalk condition and pedestrian-friendly areas. Then Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is implemented...

The pressure of city on environment has been assessed through the notion of ecological footprint, which provides information about the metabolism of cities. It is defined by measuring the complex flows of inputs and outputs by using the prevailing technologies (Wackernagel and Rees, 1996). Nowadays, there is a substantial and growing concern over the planning of cities on the basis of the adoption of a more eco-systemic approach. Planners need to expand their scope to implement desired ecological outcomes that comprise urban systems and physical networks in order to achieve eco-development. From energy and transportation to water and green infrastructure, planners can shape systems to shrink the ecological footprint and configure a more resilient urban form (Raven 2010). This change towards a more ecocycle-balance...

In order for Greece to regain its reliability there was the need to provide the international and national investment community with a stable and transparent investment legislative framework. This would help investors to overcome bureaucratic obstacles and significant land use restrictions that have inhibited major investments in Greece. Therefore, a new Law, well known as Fast Track Law (L. 3894/2010) has been enacted in order to make the implementation and licensing procedure of strategic -private interest- investments easier, smoother and more attractive. However, even though the whole Fast Track Process has been designated since 2010, only a few investment projects have evolved. The paper has a two-fold objective: first, to present the key features of the legislative framework, the required conditions, the tools and the procedure concerning the exp...

Η περιοχή της Θεσσαλονίκης αποτελεί το εμπειρικό πεδίο για την πιλοτική εφαρμογή της μεθοδολογίας.

Urban sprawl is not considered to be a static, unsustainable urban form, but rather a dynamic process of urban deconcentration through which the urban structure evolves. After identifying the main characteristics of urban sprawl, this article investigates the connection between urban sprawl and the urban system through the concept of polycentricity. Finally, the two-way relationship between urban sprawl and the urban system is highlighted. Based on the above, an integrated theoretical, conceptual and methodological framework is formulated. A key finding was the emergence of ?small-scale? polycentricity, which implies increasing monocentricity over a wider spatial area. This raises questions over the distinction between the negative phenomenon of urban sprawl and sustainable polycentric forms, and points out a need to review the explanatory devices and theories used in spatial analysis and planning. Empi...
